Amazon operates Amazon Pharmacy, an online prescription drug delivery service in the US.

TJ Parker, whose father was a pharmacist, met Elliot Cohen while Parker attended pharmacy school in Boston and Cohen was in business school at MIT. They co-founded PillPack in 2013; it started serving customers in 2014, with Parker's dad among its first pharmacists. Amazon bought PillPack in 2018 for about $750 million.

The founders helped steer the launch of Amazon Pharmacy and served as vice presidents of pharmacy until recently being shifted to consulting roles, Axios reported. Amazon had reshuffled its health leadership: former Prime boss Neil Lindsay was elevated in December 2021, and John Love, from the Alexa division, was named VP of Pharmacy and PillPack in January 2022. The same stretch saw the Haven joint venture with Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan disband, and Amazon announce it would shutter Amazon Care.

Parker and Cohen announced they were leaving Amazon at the end of September 2022, posting the news on Parker's LinkedIn. Lindsay called the departure 'bittersweet' and thanked them for helping develop the strategy, writing that 'the PillPack business and capabilities became the foundation of Amazon Pharmacy'.

The founders' product became the stated foundation of Amazon Pharmacy, yet both were moved out of operating roles to consulting before they left.

Their exit came amid a broader health leadership reset: Lindsay took over health in December 2021, John Love took pharmacy in January 2022.

The surrounding record was rough: the Haven JV disbanded and Amazon Care was shut for being incomplete as a telehealth offering.

Amazon kept investing — One Medical at $3.9B was announced the same summer — but with operators, not the acquired founders, in charge.

Acquisitions buy more than products — they buy founders' conviction, but rarely for long: within four years Amazon Pharmacy had professional operators where its founding pharmacists stood.

As of September 19, 2022, Parker and Cohen were set to leave at month's end, with Lindsay staying on as their health-services chief and John Love running Pharmacy and PillPack. Amazon was awaiting the One Medical acquisition announced that July and still operated a consumer diagnostics venture.
