What the business is
Balto Energy helps homeowners plan and finance home electrification — solar, batteries, EV chargers, heat pumps — starting with solar installers as its customers.
Starting capital
$1M from KDX, Leap Forward Ventures and others (2024)
How it started
James Quazi spent nearly 20 years across climate tech — an executive at SolarCity, then CTO of Dandelion, the geothermal startup spun out of Alphabet's X division — and kept seeing two requirements decide startup fates: 'You have to be able to model energy systems to a high degree of accuracy, and you have to be able to finance things.' Quasi-retired, he studied California's new NEM 3.0 solar rules and couldn't stay out.
What happened
Balto works as a decision tree for homeowners: savings-first points to solar, a battery and an EV charger; resiliency during extreme weather points to electrifying heating, cooling, hot water and cooking. It models a home's energy usage from customer-provided utility data, and charges installers a fee for platform access and sales tools. The financing is deliberately not a loan: Balto owns the solar assets for a period, monetising depreciation and renewable energy credits it sells on, and directs part of that revenue into lower rates — Quazi claimed roughly half of a typical 20-year loan's 12%.
What has to be true
NEM 3.0 broke solar-only economics but improved solar-plus-storage, forcing installers to widen their offers — Balto sells them that expansion.
The non-loan structure monetises trailing benefits homeowners can't capture — depreciation, renewable energy credits — to fund cheaper capital.
A contractor-agnostic platform attacks the fragmentation that forces homeowners to act as their own general contractors today.
What can be applied
Climate adoption is a financing problem wearing a hardware costume: who owns the asset decides who can afford the transition.
Aftermath
As of June 2024, Balto was operating stealthily with $1 million raised, serving solar installers first, with plans to open the platform to other trades.
