Oven builds Bun, an open-source MIT-licensed all-in-one JavaScript toolkit — runtime, bundler, transpiler, test runner and package manager — designed as a faster drop-in replacement for Node.js, used by AI coding CLIs such as Claude Code, Factory AI and OpenCode.
Starting capital：$26M total: a $7M seed led by Kleiner Perkins (2022) and a $19M Series A led by Khosla Ventures (2023).
How it started
In May 2021 Jarred Sumner — ex-Stripe engineer and Thiel Fellow — began porting esbuild's transpiler to Zig. Bun v0.1.0 shipped in July 2022 and collected 20k GitHub stars in its first week; Oven raised a $7M Kleiner Perkins-led seed that fall, and the team moved to San Francisco.
What happened
Bun v1.0 (Sept 2023) brought a $19M Khosla Ventures Series A and a 14-person team; v1.1 added Windows support and v1.2/v1.3 added Postgres, S3, Redis and MySQL clients, with production users including X, Midjourney and Tailwind. From late 2024 AI coding tools shipped as Bun single-file executables, and Claude Code became Bun's biggest distribution channel; by Oct 2025 downloads hit 7.2M/month while Bun still made $0 revenue.
How it ended up
Acquired: on 2025-12-02 Anthropic announced it was acquiring Oven/Bun, the same day it reported Claude Code reaching $1B run-rate revenue six months after GA; Bun stays open-source MIT, built in public, with the same team.
Background
Bun is an open-source, MIT-licensed all-in-one JavaScript toolkit built by the startup Oven: a runtime, bundler, transpiler, test runner and package manager in a single binary, positioned as a faster drop-in replacement for Node.js. Founder Jarred Sumner started it in May 2021 out of frustration with a 45-second hot-reload loop, porting esbuild's JSX/TypeScript transpiler to Zig before building the runtime around JavaScriptCore.
Bun v0.1.0 shipped in July 2022 and hit 20k GitHub stars in its first week; Oven raised a $7M seed led by Kleiner Perkins, then a $19M Series A led by Khosla Ventures after Bun v1.0 in September 2023. The bet was that developers would consolidate Node's fragmented tooling into one fast binary. From late 2024 the bet sharpened: AI coding tools like Claude Code, Factory AI and OpenCode shipped as Bun single-file executables, and Bun's downloads passed 7.2M a month in October 2025.
Bun still made $0 revenue. On December 2, 2025, Jarred Sumner announced Anthropic had acquired Oven, the same day Anthropic reported Claude Code had reached $1B in run-rate revenue six months after launch. Anthropic is betting on Bun as the infrastructure behind Claude Code and the Claude Agent SDK; Bun remains MIT-licensed, built in public on GitHub, with the same team.
What has to be true
- A 3x-faster-than-esbuild drop-in transpiler was a wedge developers adopted without changing workflows, and the toolchain kept compounding from there.
- Single-file executables made Bun the natural distribution format for AI coding CLIs, putting it at the center of the agent era.
- With $0 revenue and four years of runway, joining Anthropic bought long-term stability that a monetization pivot could not.
- Anthropic's incentive is direct: Claude Code ships as a Bun executable, so keeping Bun excellent is part of its own product.
What can be applied
A free tool that becomes load-bearing infrastructure for a platform is more valuable owned than monetized: Sumner traded a forced 'Bun as a business' chapter for a strategic home inside Anthropic.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Bun operates inside Anthropic: it remains open source under the MIT license, built in public on GitHub, and the same team continues as the runtime powering Claude Code, the Claude Agent SDK and Anthropic's future AI coding tools. Anthropic reported Claude Code passing $1B in run-rate revenue in November 2025, and the acquisition was framed as consolidating the infrastructure layer that AI agents depend on — the same pattern as OpenAI's later acquisition of Astral, the company behind the Python tools uv and Ruff.
