Clueso bets AI turns screen recordings into tutorials; PH top of July 2025, 150+ clients
Three IIT Madras alumni pivoted from a rejected PDF-notes app to AI video docs; seed $1.4M, PH 2025-07 monthly #1, 150+ B2B customers
Clueso
What the business is
An AI tool that converts screen recordings into step-by-step documentation and studio-quality tutorial videos for B2B SaaS.
Starting capital:$1.4M seed led by f7 Ventures with Y Combinator (Apr 2024)
How it started
The three co-founders, IIT Madras alumni, entered Y Combinator's 2023 batch with Desklamp, a PDF note-sharing tool that had 25,000+ users but no paying ones. Group partners declined to back it; after months of what CEO Akash Anand called pivot hell, and on advice from YC's Michael Seibel, they rebuilt around their own pain — producing an explainer video for Desklamp had been miserable. Clueso was founded in Bengaluru in 2023.
What happened
In April 2024 Clueso raised a $1.4M seed led by f7 Ventures with Y Combinator participating. By June 2024 the startup had onboarded 150+ companies in ten months, roughly 40% of them Indian and 40% US, European or East Asian, with Singapore fintech Aspire among named customers and 25+ output languages. Its Product Hunt launch then topped the July 2025 monthly leaderboard with 1,296 points and 329 comments.
How it ended up
Still live and growing, with no exit or shutdown news as of Sept 2026; the founders' mid-2024 stated goal was five to six times customer growth, to 600–700 companies, within twelve months — whether that was met is not public
Background
Clueso's bet is that software documentation should not be written and filmed by hand at all — it should be generated. The Bengaluru startup, founded in 2023 by three IIT Madras alumni (CEO Akash Anand, Prajwal Prakash, Neel Balar), takes a rough screen recording of any software process and turns it into step-by-step documentation and a studio-quality tutorial, no video team required.
The company arrived there by failure: the founders' earlier product, Desklamp, got them into Y Combinator's 2023 batch but was never backed for YC Demo Day, and no university would pay for it. Stuck in what Anand called pivot hell, they followed Michael Seibel's advice and rebuilt around the problem they themselves lived — producing explainer videos for Desklamp had consumed weeks.
The stack stitches Deepgram transcription, open language models for script cleanup, ElevenLabs voiceover with accent options, and an in-house video pipeline that re-syncs audio, branding and effects. The wedge is B2B SaaS explainer content: about 40% of customers are Indian and 40% US/Europe/East Asia, with fintech Aspire among the named users, plus translation into 25+ languages.
Traction followed a $1.4M seed (Apr 2024, f7 Ventures with YC) and 150+ customers within ten months; the Product Hunt launch took the July 2025 monthly leaderboard outright at 1,296 points with 329 comments. As of Sept 2026 the product is live with no exit or shutdown news.
What has to be true
- The pivot kept the team and the craft but changed the job: instead of persuading students to pay, they automated the most expensive recurring content an enterprise must produce.
- Speed of onboarding (150+ customers in ten months at small scale) validated demand before any growth spend, and the July 2025 Product Hunt win added free distribution at the right moment.
- The risk is a crowded demo-generation space with shared models — Deepgram and ElevenLabs are available to rivals — so the moat must come from pipeline quality and documentation depth.
What can be applied
When a product is rejected but the team's skill survives, re-point the same team at the narrowest expensive problem in the room — a video team is the most outsourced function a startup has.
Aftermath
As of Sept 2026 Clueso is live; no further funding, acquisition, or shutdown announced beyond the April 2024 seed. The founders' June 2024 goal to grow from ~150 to 600–700 customers within a year is not public. The moat is questionable: shared models and copyable features. Product Hunt win and 40/40 India-export split show demand; whether teams keep Clueso as a habit is open.
