Coda's merchant-of-record bet: $1.75B processed, then buys Europe's Recharge

Singapore's Coda Payments bets game publishers outsource monetization; 2024 volume tops $1.75B across 200M+ users, and it buys Europe's Recharge in 2025.

Coda Payments

The betGame publishers would outsource global collection to a Singapore merchant of record, so SEA players could pay via local wallets and carrier billing instead of cards.Scaling

What the business is

A Singapore-based payments company acting as merchant of record for game and digital-content publishers, running Codashop, one of the world's largest game top-up websites.

How it started

Founded in Singapore in 2011, Coda built Codashop as free-to-play gaming exploded across Southeast Asia, where card penetration was low and local channels — wallets, carrier billing, convenience stores — dominated how players paid.

What happened

Coda grew into one of Asia's largest monetization infrastructure firms: 500+ titles from 300+ publisher partners, 400+ local payment channels, and webstores for franchises such as Call of Duty Mobile and EA Sports FC Mobile. In July 2025 it signed a deal to acquire Amsterdam-based Recharge, Europe's leading prepaid digital-storefront platform (Recharge.com, Startselect.com).

How it ended up

Still scaling: the Recharge deal, announced 2025-07-17, extends Coda beyond gaming into consumer prepaid and Europe, with the combined business processing over US$1.75B in 2024.

Background

Coda Payments is a Singapore-based fintech founded in 2011 that became one of Asia's largest digital-content monetization platforms. Its bet: mobile-game and content publishers would hand global collection to a single merchant of record, letting Southeast Asian players pay with local wallets, carrier billing and cash channels instead of credit cards that most of them did not have.

The wedge was Codashop, a top-up website where players buy in-game credits with no login and no app-store friction. By 2020 more than 11 million users visited Codashop monthly, and Coda had expanded into 26+ emerging markets with its Codapay and xShop products.

Scale followed the bet: Coda now distributes 500+ titles from 300+ publisher partners — including Electronic Arts, Activision, Riot Games and HoYoverse — through 400+ local payment channels, powering webstores for franchises like Call of Duty Mobile and EA Sports FC Mobile. In July 2025 it agreed to acquire Amsterdam-based Recharge, Europe's leading prepaid digital-storefront platform.

Based on 2024 figures, the combined business would have processed more than US$1.75 billion in sales, served over 200 million customers and operated in 180+ markets. The acquisition moves Coda beyond gaming into consumer prepaid — Apple, Google, PlayStation and Netflix vouchers — backed by investors Apis Partners, Insight Partners and Smash Capital.

What has to be true

  • SEA free-to-play gaming boomed while card penetration stayed low, making local payment rails the only realistic way to monetize players.
  • Publishers did not want per-market payment, fraud and compliance overhead; a merchant of record turned it into one contract.
  • Codashop's no-login, instant top-up UX built a trusted consumer brand — 11M+ monthly visitors by 2020.
  • Processing US$1.75B for 200M+ users gave Coda the scale and credibility to buy Recharge and move beyond gaming.
  • Recharge adds a profitable direct-to-consumer engine in Europe, balancing Coda's publisher-heavy B2B business.

What can be applied

Sell the painful, unglamorous layer — collecting money across hundreds of messy payment markets — as a service; the aggregation becomes the moat that compounds into adjacent categories.

Aftermath

As of July 2025, Coda had signed the acquisition of Recharge, and the combined business would have processed over US$1.75B in 2024, serving 200M+ customers across 180+ markets. Recharge contributes a direct-to-consumer prepaid engine — 16,000+ products, 8M+ users, and brands like Apple, Google, Vodafone and PlayStation — on top of Coda's publisher-focused merchant-of-record business. The company continues to scale from Singapore; no shutdown or reversal has been reported.
