Cora

The betBrazil's ~5M SMEs, underserved by incumbent banks, will switch to a free digital account; interchange funds growth, credit becomes the main monetization.Scaling

What the business is

Cora is a São Paulo-based digital bank for small and medium businesses: a free checking account combined with a software layer for financial management, corporate cards, and later working capital and receivables credit.

Starting capitalR$10M seed (late 2019), US$26.7M Series A led by Ribbit Capital (April 2021), and US$116M Series B led by Greenoaks with Tiger Global and Tencent (August 2021) — US$152.7M total since inception.

How it started

Founded in São Paulo in 2019 by Igor Senra, Cora launched its product in October 2020 after securing a Central Bank license, targeting Brazil's ~5M companies underserved by traditional banks.

What happened

Cora grew ~40% a month in customers and ~60% monthly in transaction value through 2021, drawing a $116M Series B led by Greenoaks with Tiger Global and Tencent. It kept most offerings free, monetizing via interchange, and used the data for a credit roadmap — corporate cards in beta, then receivables and working capital. It reached operational breakeven at the end of 2024 and sustained profitability through 2025.

How it ended up

Scaling: 1.5M+ customers and R$190B+ processed in 2025 with growth above 60%, entering 2026 focused on expanding credit (working capital, receivables) with AI-based risk.

Background

Cora is a São Paulo digital bank built for Brazil's small and medium businesses: a free checking account combined with a software layer for managing finances, later adding corporate cards, working capital and receivables credit. The bet was that SMEs, historically underserved by expensive and inefficient incumbent banks, would move to a free, well-designed account — and that interchange would fund the business while data enabled credit.

Founded in 2019 by Igor Senra, Cora secured a finance license from Brazil's Central Bank and launched its product in October 2020. Through 2021 it grew customers ~40% a month and transaction value ~60% a month, reaching 120,000+ customers by August and raising a $116M Series B led by Greenoaks with Tiger Global and Tencent, for $152.7M total since inception.

Cora kept most services free, monetizing through interchange like Nubank, and used the data for a credit roadmap. It hit operational breakeven at the end of 2024, sustained profitability through 2025, and closed the year with 1.5M+ customers, R$190B+ in transaction volume and growth above 60% — entering 2026 with credit expansion and AI-based risk as the stated focus.

What has to be true

  • The bet is explicit: free, well-designed SME banking can win a ~5M-company market the incumbents under-serve.
  • Traction is specific and dated: 120k customers ten months in (2021), then 1.5M customers and R$190B processed in 2025.
  • The story shows the Nubank playbook applied to business banking: free product, interchange funding, credit as the later monetization layer.
  • Sustained breakeven since late 2024 while growing >60% demonstrates the 'scale responsibly' tradeoff.

What can be applied

Free banking wins underserved SMEs the way it won consumers: start with a loved free product, fund growth with interchange, then sell credit to the customers whose cash flow you already see.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02 Cora is scaling: Fincatch (2026-03-02) reports 1.5M+ customers and R$190B+ in 2025 transaction volume, operational growth above 60%, and breakeven sustained for more than a year since Q4 2024. The 2026 strategy, per CEO Igor Senra, is to accelerate credit — working capital and boleto receivables already in the portfolio — using AI and data, while keeping the regulated, Central Bank-supervised model. No newer funding round was found in this pass.
