Royal Smash: Cypher Games' funded fast-follow tops Japan's mini-game chart

Two months after its July 2026 launch, Cypher Games' smash-puzzle Royal Smash! passed 9M installs and held Japan's #1 Android mini-game chart spot.

The betThat a $40M-funded Istanbul studio could win a clone wave by shipping fast and buying scale: Royal Smash! hit 9M installs and Japan's #1 chart within weeks.Scaling

What the business is

Cypher Games is an Istanbul mobile-gaming company run by co-founder and CEO Anil Simsek. It raised a $10M seed in September 2024 to develop its announced debut Match Squad, a match-3 game fused with dice mechanics, then a $30M Series A in October 2025 led by The Raine Group and Play Ventures. Royal Smash! – Physics Puzzle, a free-to-play physics-destruction title in the smash-puzzle wave, launched in July 2026.

Starting capitalA $10M seed in September 2024 and an oversubscribed $30M Series A in October 2025 led by The Raine Group and Play Ventures, with participation from MIT, E2VC and Big Bets and existing backers including King founder Riccardo Zacconi, Tripledot co-founder Akin Babayigit and Discord CEO Humam Sakhnini.

How it started

Cypher Games raised a $10M seed in September 2024 to build its debut title Match Squad, which fuses match-3 with dice-based luck gameplay and a city-building metagame, then closed an oversubscribed $30M Series A in October 2025 with plans to roll Match Squad out and start a second project within two years. By July 2026 the studio had Royal Smash! – Physics Puzzle live, entering the smash-destruction wave that AppMagic counted at 70 new titles for the year — nearly 50 of them added since June.

What happened

Royal Smash! launched in July 2026 alongside a flood of followers of Flow Games' Smash Fest!, which AppMagic estimated had already generated 15M+ installs and $4M in in-app revenue in under two months. Within roughly two months Royal Smash! passed 9M installs and $1M in revenue, per mobilegamer.biz citing AppMagic. In Japan it took the #1 Android free mini-game chart position on most days from August 7 through September 6, 2026, and climbed to #5 in the overall free games chart by early September.

How it ended up

The bet is still playing out: Cypher Games has not disclosed whether Royal Smash! or the originally announced Match Squad is its strategic flagship, and holding a chart inside a 70-title wave depends on continued user acquisition as clone supply pushes install costs up. What the launch has shown is that a well-funded studio can enter a trend late and still take a top chart within weeks.

Background

Cypher Games is an Istanbul mobile-gaming studio run by co-founder and CEO Anil Simsek. It raised a $10M seed in September 2024 to build Match Squad, a match-3 game fused with dice mechanics, and closed an oversubscribed $30M Series A in October 2025 led by The Raine Group and Play Ventures with backing from founders of King, Tripledot and Huuuge's investor network.

The studio's 2026 breakout was not its announced debut but Royal Smash! – Physics Puzzle, launched in July into the smash-destruction wave that Flow Games' Smash Fest! had created. AppMagic counted 70 new 'smash'-titled games in 2026, nearly 50 of them since June, with Moon Active, Azur Games, Supercent and Tripledot all testing similar titles.

Royal Smash! passed 9M installs and $1M in revenue within roughly two months of launch, according to mobilegamer.biz citing AppMagic, and held the #1 Android free mini-game chart position in Japan on most days from August 7 through September 6, 2026, reaching #5 in the overall free games chart in early September.

The case shows how far a funding and talent advantage can go in a fast-moving chart: Cypher shipped a polished physics puzzler into a proven trend and used capital to buy scale. Whether Royal Smash! becomes a durable business, or Match Squad remains the strategic bet, is still untested.

What has to be true

  • Cypher's $40M of disclosed funding let it ship polished production fast and run the user acquisition a top chart requires, something tiny clone studios cannot match.
  • Launching weeks after Smash Fest! proved the loop meant the market risk was already retired — the studio rode a validated trend instead of inventing one.
  • AppMagic's count of 70 smash clones and 9M Royal Smash! installs shows the winner in such waves is the follower with the strongest execution and biggest acquisition budget.
  • Japan's #1 mini-game chart run gave Royal Smash! a durable organic position in one of the largest paid-game markets, reducing dependence on bought installs.
  • Risk: a 70-title clone wave inflates install costs and shortens trend life, so chart leadership may not translate into lasting margin.

What can be applied

When a viral casual loop appears, speed and spending decide who keeps the chart: Cypher shipped Royal Smash! weeks after Smash Fest!'s breakout and out-ran dozens of smaller clones to 9M installs.

Aftermath

As of September 6, 2026 Royal Smash! still held the #1 Android free mini-game chart in Japan, roughly two months after its July launch, with 9M installs and $1M in revenue reported by mobilegamer.biz citing AppMagic. Cypher has disclosed no funding since its October 2025 Series A, and the studio has not said publicly whether Royal Smash! or the announced Match Squad is its long-term flagship.
