What the business is
An end-to-end returns solution for e-commerce sellers in Latin America: boxless drop-off at city points, automated software, condition assessment on receipt, instant refunds, and AI-driven exchange recommendations that retain revenue.
Starting capital
$600K pre-seed (August 2023)
How it started
Agustin Shutte and Emiliano Monge's first logistics startup showed them firsthand how inefficient LatAm returns were. They founded Devolut in Mexico early in 2023 to rebuild the reverse leg of e-commerce.
What happened
Three months after launch Devolut had 20 B2B clients in three countries and raised $600K in pre-seed. Revenue model: a monthly software charge per merchant, a per-return management fee, and a percentage of upsells and cross-sells from its AI exchange recommendations; a digital wallet for refunds is planned.
How it ended up
As of August 2023, Devolut is developing its AI returns and exchange algorithms and running a pilot with Sally Beauty's 240 stores in Mexico, with the return-point network as its stated differentiator against software-only rivals like Chile's Reversso.
What has to be true
Shutte cites evidence that a good return experience generates up to 30% in revenues, and claims a 50x-60x ROI on Devolut for merchants.
LatAm e-commerce has 7x headroom: about two purchases per person per year versus 50-60 in the US, so returns volume compounds with the market.
Return laws in four major markets convert returns from courtesy to obligation, forcing merchants to buy infrastructure.
Competitors like Reversso sell software portals only; owning the physical network is the moat Devolut is explicitly betting on.
What can be applied
Reverse logistics is a physical-network problem wearing a software costume: whoever owns the drop-off points owns the merchant relationship, and the software alone is commoditizable.
Aftermath
As of August 28, 2023, Devolut is developing its AI-powered returns and exchange algorithms, building toward refunds via its own digital wallet, expanding the city-point network, and testing with Sally Beauty's 240 stores in Mexico.
