ECC bets agent harnesses, not models, fix AI coding — 223K stars

Affaan Mustafa's ECC packages skills, rules, hooks and security scans for Claude Code, Codex and Cursor — 223.5K stars by end Q2 2026, MIT.

What the business is

ECC is an open-source agent harness that layers skills, agents, rules, hooks, memory and AgentShield security scanning on top of Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode and other AI coding tools.

How it started

Affaan Mustafa created everything-claude-code, which grew from a hackathon project into the most-starred shared configuration layer for AI coding agents. ROSS Index Q1 2026 logged the repo at 119.8K stars by 2026-03-31 — a 119.8x jump from its January 2026 start.

What happened

By late April 2026 the renamed ECC repo had 170K stars and 26.4K forks with 168 contributors, and v2.0.0-rc.1 shipped a Rust-based control plane plus desktop dashboard on 2026-04-28 (Augment Code). The project expanded to 68 agents, 286 skills, 94 command shims and cross-tool adapters for Codex, Cursor, OpenCode, Gemini, Zed, Copilot and more, plus a GitHub App (ecc-tools) and the ecc-universal npm package; Aliyun Developer counted 230K+ stars and 30K+ forks by 2026-07-21.

How it ended up

Still live and scaling: MIT-licensed open source with a GitHub App and paid ECC Pro tier (private repos from $19/seat/month), funded by sponsors and Pro subscribers; ROSS Q2 2026 lists ECC Tools (San Francisco, founded 2026) as the quarter's #1 trending open-source startup.

Background

ECC (Everything Claude Code) is an open-source agent harness built by Affaan Mustafa. It does not replace an AI coding tool; it layers skills, agents, rules, hooks, memory and security scanning on top of Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, OpenCode and other harnesses, so an agent plans before it builds, verifies with tests, reviews its own work, and turns repeated wins into reusable skills. The repo is MIT-licensed and installs through a single guided setup.

The strategic bet is that AI coding's bottleneck is no longer model capability but engineering discipline — that raw agents drift without a process, so the winning layer is a portable, version-controlled configuration system rather than another agent. ECC shipped 68 agents, 286 skills and 94 command shims, with adapters for a dozen tools, plus AgentShield, a scanner that audits prompts, hooks, MCP configs, permissions and secrets.

The numbers validated the bet. ROSS Index Q1 2026 logged the repo at 119.8K stars by 2026-03-31, a 119.8x jump from its January start; by 2026-04-29 it had 170K stars and 26.4K forks (Augment Code); Aliyun Developer reported 230K+ stars and 30K+ forks on 2026-07-21. ROSS Q2 2026 ranked ECC Tools — the San Francisco company founded in 2026 — as the quarter's #1 trending open-source startup at 223.5K stars.

What has to be true

  • The bet targets the real failure mode of AI coding — erratic behavior across sessions — instead of chasing another model-vs-model benchmark.
  • Portability across Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and OpenCode makes one configuration layer worth more than any single-tool integration.
  • AgentShield turns security from an afterthought into a shipped feature, addressing the top objection to autonomous agents in production.
  • Star growth from 119.8K (Q1 2026) to 223.5K (Q2 2026) shows the problem statement resonated at massive scale, not just with one team.
  • A single maintainer shipping weekly across seven harnesses keeps the project lean and community-funded via sponsors and a Pro tier.

What can be applied

When everyone races to build better models, the defensible layer is the boring one above them: portable rules, workflows and audits that make raw agent capability behave in a team.

Aftermath

As of September 2, 2026, ECC is live and scaling: the MIT repo (affaan-m/ECC, 2,615+ commits) installs via npx ecc-universal or Claude Code's plugin marketplace, monetized through ECC Pro (GitHub App for private repos, $19/seat/month) plus sponsors. ROSS Q2 2026 lists ECC Tools (San Francisco, founded 2026) as the quarter's top trending open-source startup at 223.5K stars; Aliyun counted 230K+ stars and 30K+ forks in July 2026. Open questions: can a configuration layer sustain a company, and does the one-maintainer model survive as adoption grows?
