Exponent Energy's 15-minute-charge bet: commercial EVs, from 3-wheelers to buses
Ex-Ather engineers bet fleets would go electric only if charging matched diesel; by 2026 Exponent ran ~200 stations and raised ₹200 crore.
Exponent Energy
What the business is
Runs a fast-charging network plus leased batteries for commercial EVs - three-wheelers today, buses next - charging 0-100% in about 15 minutes.
Starting capital:About $65.7M total by June 2026, including a ₹200 crore ($21.1M) round led by 360 ONE Asset and TDK Ventures
How it started
Founded in 2020 by Arun Vinayak and Sanjay Byalal Jagannath, both former Ather Energy executives, Exponent bet on commercial vehicles: about 10% of India's vehicles but roughly 70% of its transport energy. The obstacle was charging time - fleets would not wait an hour on a highway.
What happened
Exponent built the e^pack battery, e^pump charger and e^plug connector, claiming a 15-minute charge with a 3,000-cycle battery life. In August 2024 it partnered with bus maker Veera Vahana on the Veera Mahasamrat intercity e-bus, calling its 1MW charging the world's third such technology after Tesla and Siemens. By 2025 it counted 1,700+ vehicles, 350,000+ rapid-charging sessions and 2 million+ km covered.
How it ended up
In June 2026 Exponent raised ₹200 crore ($21.1M), co-led by 360 ONE Asset and TDK Ventures, taking total funding to $65.7M. It was running about 200 charging stations in Bengaluru and Delhi and planned expansion into new cities and commercial vehicle segments.
Background
Exponent Energy, founded in 2020 by former Ather Energy executives Arun Vinayak and Sanjay Byalal Jagannath, bet that commercial vehicles would go electric only if charging felt like diesel refueling. The pair pointed out that commercial vehicles are about 10% of India's vehicles but consume roughly 70% of transport energy, making fleets the biggest prize - and charging time the reason they stayed on diesel.
The company built its own stack: the e^pack battery, e^pump fast charger and e^plug connector, claiming a 15-minute charge with up to 3,000 charging cycles. In August 2024 it unveiled the Veera Mahasamrat EV with bus maker Veera Vahana, a 320 kWh intercity e-bus using what Exponent called the world's third 1MW charging technology, after Tesla and Siemens, with a 30% operating-cost cut versus diesel buses.
By 2025 Autocar Professional reported 1,700+ vehicles on Exponent's network, 350,000+ rapid-charging sessions and 2 million+ km covered, with stations in Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Hyderabad. In June 2026 the company raised ₹200 crore ($21.1M) co-led by 360 ONE Asset and TDK Ventures, taking total funding to $65.7M, and said it would expand beyond Bengaluru and Delhi into new vehicle segments.
The model is deliberately energy-first: Vinayak told ET that for every dollar of battery Exponent sells, it aims to make three to four dollars on energy, describing commercial vehicles as a roughly $90 billion energy market.
What has to be true
- Charging time, not vehicle price, was the reason fleet operators stayed with diesel - a constraint a 15-minute charge could remove.
- Commercial vehicles are a small share of vehicles but the majority of energy demand, concentrating the market opportunity.
- Owning both battery and charger let Exponent monetize energy rather than hardware margins.
- Starting with three-wheelers gave field data and revenue before moving to heavier buses.
What can be applied
Exponent inverted the EV business: don't sell the battery, sell the energy it unlocks. Charging time, not vehicle price, was the adoption bottleneck, so it monetized the constraint itself.
Aftermath
As of 1 September 2026, Exponent Energy is scaling from its two-city base: about 200 stations live in Bengaluru and Delhi, expansion planned into new cities and vehicle segments, and a financing arm, Exponent One, led by Sandeep Divakaran after Jagannath moved to an advisor role. MCA filings from March 2026 pegged the valuation around ₹1,200-1,300 crore. Vinayak told ET the next phase is putting the technology in as many vehicles as possible, competing with ChargeZone, Statiq, Tata Power and Jio-bp Pulse.
