How it started
Serial entrepreneur Brett Adcock bootstrapped Figure in 2022 in Sunnyvale, California with roughly $100 million of his own money, vowing a walking bipedal robot within a year; the company hit that goal. In January 2024 Figure signed its first commercial agreement — with BMW Manufacturing — to place humanoids at its Spartanburg, South Carolina plant, starting in the body shop and sheet metal with five tasks, one at a time, under a robotics-as-a-service model.
What happened
A month after the BMW deal, Figure closed a $675M Series B at a $2.6B valuation with Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI Startup Fund, Amazon's Industrial Innovation Fund, Jeff Bezos, Intel Capital and others, and signed an OpenAI collaboration to build AI models for robots. Over 11 months in 2025, Figure 02 robots ran 10-hour shifts five days a week at Spartanburg, loaded 90,000+ sheet-metal parts, logged 1,250+ runtime hours, and contributed to production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles.
How it ended up
The bet is scaling: after the Figure 02 deployment, BMW and Figure announced a Figure 03 project at Spartanburg in June 2026 — moving humanoids into a logistics sequencing use case — while Figure 02 was retired with its lessons folded into Figure 03.
Background
Figure was founded in 2022 by serial entrepreneur Brett Adcock, who put roughly $100 million of his own money into the company on a bet that the humanoid form factor — a robot shaped like a person, able to walk and use hands — would eventually do useful work wherever humans do. The near-term target was factories: structured, repetitive, and willing to pay for reliability.
The first test came in January 2024, when Figure signed its first commercial agreement with BMW Manufacturing to deploy humanoids at Spartanburg, South Carolina — BMW's only US plant. The deal started small with five initial tasks, rolled out one at a time and expanded only if output targets were met, under a robotics-as-a-service model. A month later Figure raised a $675M Series B at a $2.6B valuation from Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, Amazon and Jeff Bezos, and signed an OpenAI collaboration for robot AI.
The deployment became the industry's most documented humanoid pilot: over 11 months in 2025, Figure 02 ran 10-hour shifts five days a week in the body shop, loaded 90,000+ sheet-metal parts, logged 1,250+ runtime hours, and contributed to the production of more than 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles. BMW said the pilot proved humanoids could perform precise, repeatable work under real production conditions.
The result was a follow-on: in June 2026 BMW and Figure announced Figure 03, moving humanoids from the body shop into a logistics sequencing use case at Spartanburg, with safer soft components, wireless charging and redesigned wrists. Figure 02 was retired, with lessons from the line — including its forearm as the top failure point — built into Figure 03.
What has to be true
- Factory work was the smallest valuable wedge: one repetitive, measurable task (sheet-metal loading) let Figure prove uptime and accuracy against hard KPIs before asking for broader deployments.
- The BMW deal was structured as a paid pilot with expansion gates — five tasks, then scale if targets were met — aligning incentives and producing the 30,000-car proof point.
- Self-funding (~$100M) plus a blue-chip Series B let Figure build hardware and software without selling early, while the OpenAI collaboration targeted the language-driven autonomy the product needs.

As of September 2026, Figure had retired Figure 02 after its BMW deployment and was running the Figure 03 project at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg, starting with a logistics sequencing use case announced in June 2026; BMW called the plant 'the birthplace of humanoid robotics' in its operations. Figure remained private with a stated mission of general-purpose humanoids at scale. Its main validation to date is the BMW pilot: 30,000+ vehicles, 90,000+ parts loaded and 1,250+ runtime hours, with the next test being whether Figure 03 expands reliably from the body shop into assembly and logistics.
