What the business is

GoTyme Bank is a Philippine digital bank — a partnership between the Gokongwei Group and Singapore-based Tyme — offering savings, debit cards, credit and investments through an app and in-store kiosks.

How it started

GoTyme launched in the Philippines in October 2022 as a venture between the Gokongwei Group and Singapore-based Tyme, which runs digital banks across Asia and Africa. President and CEO Nate Clarke had previously built TymeBank in South Africa, where about 3 million of its 3.5 million customers joined through kiosks deployed in retail environments; the new bank's launch was marked by kiosks rolling out through the Robinsons retail network, staffed by human ambassadors who handle the whole onboarding process in-store.

What happened

GoTyme scaled by expanding the physical access points and stacking products on top of deposits: from savings it added credit products including the MoreTyme buy-now-pay-later offer and salary lending, plus SME working-capital lending through a TikTok Shop partnership, and inward remittance, crypto trading and virtual cards — becoming one of the first Philippine banks to launch Google Pay. Kiosks grew to more than 500 nationwide by end-2025.

How it ended up

Scaling and winning everyday usage: deposits reached ₱43B at end-2025 (up over 70% year on year) on 8.3M customers, the loan book grew 43%, and on 2026-02-19 Visa named GoTyme the most-used Visa debit card in the Philippines, with more than 8M card users and payment volume up over 150% year on year.

Background

GoTyme Bank is a Philippine digital bank jointly owned by the Gokongwei Group and Singapore-based Tyme, a digital-banking group operating in Asia and Africa. Its bet is that Filipinos will bank where they already shop: instead of branches, it offers a mobile app plus staffed digital kiosks inside Gokongwei malls, supermarkets and retail stores, where customers open accounts and receive a debit card in about five minutes.

The model was not invented in the Philippines. TymeBank in South Africa had already signed up roughly 3 million of its 3.5 million customers through kiosks in retail environments, so GoTyme's leadership — President and CEO Nate Clarke, who built TymeBank, and co-CEO Albert Tinio — brought a proven distribution playbook into the Gokongwei Group's nationwide retail footprint when the bank launched in October 2022.

The results show up in usage, not just sign-ups. By end-2025 GoTyme had 8.3M customers (1.5x the prior year), more than 500 kiosks, ₱43B in deposits (up over 70% year on year) and a loan book up 43%, with 1.3M new customers in 2025 coming from previously unbanked or underbanked segments. In February 2026 Visa named it the most-used Visa debit card in the Philippines, with more than 8M card users and payment volume up over 150% year on year.

The unresolved question is profitability: GoTyme has not disclosed earnings, and it competes with GCash and Maya on wallets and with incumbent banks digitizing their own channels. What the growth shows is that physical trust points inside an existing retail ecosystem can acquire banking customers at a scale pure-play digital apps struggle to match.

What has to be true

  • Retail-trust shortcut: placing onboarding inside Robinsons supermarkets let GoTyme borrow the Gokongwei Group's nationwide physical trust instead of buying awareness with ad spend.
  • Proven playbook reused: Tyme had already converted roughly 3M of 3.5M TymeBank customers in South Africa via retail kiosks, so the model shipped with operating evidence.
  • Onboarding as a product: printing a working debit card in five minutes removed the classic digital-bank friction of waiting days for a card to arrive.
  • Underserved focus paid off: 1.3M of the customers added in 2025 were previously unbanked or underbanked, expanding the addressable base rather than only cannibalizing rivals.
  • Products stacked on the same distribution: BNPL, salary loans and TikTok Shop SME lending layered credit revenue on top of the deposit base.

What can be applied

Distribution can beat brand spending in underbanked markets: kiosks inside a trusted retail network turned account opening into a mall errand and built 8.3M customers in three years.

Aftermath

As of 2026-02-19 GoTyme is still scaling: 8.3M customers at end-2025 (1.5x 2024), 500+ kiosks, ₱43B deposits and a 43% larger loan book, and Visa counts it as the Philippines' most-used Visa debit card with more than 8M card users and payment volume up over 150% year on year. It has expanded into Google Pay, inward remittance, crypto trading and virtual cards. Competition remains intense — GCash and Maya lead the wallet market and incumbents are digitizing — and GoTyme has not disclosed profitability; the open test is whether retail-driven deposits convert into a sustainably profitable bank.
