Hudhud's Saudi maps app hit #1 on the App Store and 1M users in three weeks

A Riyadh startup bet local road knowledge could beat Google Maps; Hudhud topped Saudi's App Store and passed 1M users within three weeks of launch.

Hudhud

The betThat Riyadh's ever-changing roads make hyper-local Saudi map data — built with LiDAR, AI and community reports — worth more than Google Maps' global data.Scaling

What the business is

Saudi-made maps and navigation app for Riyadh (expanding), with traffic alerts, Arabic voice guidance, CarPlay/Android Auto, and developer map APIs.

How it started

Founded by Faisal Al-Khamisi (co-founder of Barq, its board chairman) and Mutaib Al-Quni (a PayFort veteran) and based at The Garage in Riyadh, Hudhud spent two years building a Saudi map database before launch. The bet was simple: Riyadh's constant roadworks, diversions and new intersections make local knowledge the decisive feature, and Google's global maps lag it.

What happened

Hudhud launched officially on 2026-07-30 at a launch event in Riyadh's Al Karaj. Within three weeks it reached #1 on Saudi Arabia's App Store free chart and the top free navigation app, ahead of Google Maps, and announced 1 million users on 2026-08-17, with over 100,000 Google Play downloads by August 11. Reviews praised road accuracy, speed-bump and camera alerts, and handling of construction diversions; users also flagged gaps in place search, CarPlay and coverage. The app supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and offers map and place-search APIs for developers.

How it ended up

Still scaling as of 2026-09-02: currently Riyadh-first with more regions coming, and positioning itself as a national geospatial data platform beyond navigation — virtual tours, 3D maps, metro routes and developer services.

Background

Hudhud (هدهد) is a Saudi maps and navigation startup based at The Garage in Riyadh, founded by Faisal Al-Khamisi, who co-founded the Saudi tech company Barq, and Mutaib Al-Quni, a PayFort veteran. For two years before launch it built what it claims is a Saudi-first geographic database, using LiDAR scanning (5mm accuracy within 30m), 7 million+ images of Riyadh, computer vision and AI, instead of licensing global map data.

The app launched officially on 2026-07-30 and rode a wave of local enthusiasm: within 21 days it topped Saudi Arabia's App Store free chart, ranked the #1 free navigation app ahead of Google Maps, and its account announced 1 million users on 2026-08-17, with 100,000+ Google Play downloads by August 11. The pitch is hyper-local accuracy — traffic, closures, accidents, speed bumps and camera alerts for Riyadh's constantly changing road network — plus an Arabic interface and voice guidance, CarPlay/Android Auto support, and a community loop where users report problems and add missing places.

Hudhud's ambition runs beyond navigation: it offers virtual tours, 3D maps, metro routes, national addresses and developer map APIs, positioning the data it collects as a geospatial platform for logistics, transport and urban services. It still has gaps users complain about — place search, coverage outside Riyadh, CarPlay performance — and Google Maps remains entrenched, but topping the store and crossing a million users in under a month made it Saudi Arabia's most visible app-launch story of mid-2026.

What has to be true

  • Riyadh's constant roadworks and diversions make Google's global data visibly stale, giving local accuracy a marketing and product edge.
  • LiDAR, AI and 7M+ street images built a proprietary local database that competitors can't quickly copy.
  • The user-report loop means each million users improves the map, strengthening the product as it grows.
  • National pride and local-language-first design turned a maps app into a social-media phenomenon in Saudi Arabia.

What can be applied

A local challenger beats an incumbent not by being 'better overall' but by being more accurate on the ground users actually drive — and by turning users into the data-collection team.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02 Hudhud is scaling: it announced 1M+ users and #1 Saudi App Store chart positions in August 2026, is expanding beyond its Riyadh-first coverage, and is being positioned as a national geospatial data platform with developer APIs. Semafor and regional outlets covered its rise; the long-term test is whether it can match Google Maps' data coverage, search quality and reliability outside its home city.
