How it started
Founded in Cairo in 2012 by Omar Gabr and Moataz Soliman (Wamda; TechCrunch dates it to 2013), Instabug came through Flat6Labs Cairo, raised $300K from angels in 2013, reached TechCrunch Disrupt, then Y Combinator in 2016, where Accel led a $1.7M seed and the HQ moved to San Francisco. The product: an SDK for bug, crash and feedback reporting.
What happened
In May 2020 Accel led a $5M Series A after revenue grew 120% in 12 months and usage surged 45% since January as COVID-19 made apps the main channel to customers; 28 of the top 100 App Store apps used Instabug. In May 2022 Insight Partners led a $46M Series B as the company expanded into application performance monitoring: 2.7B devices, 110B sessions in 2021, ARR doubled, enterprise customers up 10x, clients including DoorDash, Verizon, Qualtrics, Porsche, Gojek and Clubhouse.
How it ended up
Still scaling. In September 2025 the company rebranded as Luciq and repositioned around 'agentic mobile observability', where AI agents detect, diagnose, fix and validate issues in production, per Disrupt Africa.
Background
Instabug is a mobile app monitoring and debugging platform founded in Cairo in 2012 by Omar Gabr and Moataz Soliman. Its SDK captures crash reports, bug reports and in-app feedback — famously triggered by shaking the phone — and grew out of Flat6Labs Cairo, TechCrunch Disrupt and Y Combinator 2016 into a tool used by thousands of apps worldwide.
The bet was that mobile developers would pay for visibility into how their apps behave in production. By May 2020 revenue had grown 120% in 12 months and 28 of the top 100 App Store apps used Instabug; by May 2022, after Insight Partners led a $46M Series B, the software ran on 2.7B devices, processed 110B mobile sessions in 2021, and counted DoorDash, Verizon, Qualtrics, Porsche, Gojek and Clubhouse as customers.
The company answered the limits of a crash-reporting category by expanding into application performance monitoring, then in September 2025 rebranded as Luciq to sell 'agentic mobile observability' — AI agents that detect, diagnose, fix and validate issues in production. The Cairo-born startup remains an independent, still-scaling company rather than an exit or a shutdown.
