What the business is
Ready at Dawn was the first-party Meta studio behind Echo VR and Lone Echo, previously known for The Order: 1886, God of War: Chains of Olympus and Daxter.
How it started
Meta acquired Ready at Dawn in 2020, pledging the studio would 'continue creating memorable, immersive, and innovative VR content for gamers around the world as an independently-operated studio'. The team shipped Lone Echo II for the Rift and Rift S — never natively for the standalone Quest headsets — and in August 2023 Meta shut down its most beloved title, Echo VR, with CTO Andrew 'Boz' Bosworth arguing its resources 'could be put to other uses' for the 'now tens of millions of people who are in VR'.
What happened
On August 8, 2024 — one year almost to the day after Echo VR's servers went dark — Meta closed Ready at Dawn itself, effective immediately, as Android Central reported from an internal memo by Gio Hunt, VP of Oculus Studios. A Meta spokesperson said the cuts weren't to 'save money', per se, but to keep Reality Labs within new budgetary constraints and let Oculus Studios make a 'better long-term impact' in VR development. The context: Reality Labs lost nearly $4.5 billion in the most recent earnings report, and Meta declined further comment.
How it ended up
Ready at Dawn ceased to exist on August 8, 2024; the unannounced project the team had said needed 'all hands on deck' after Echo VR's shutdown will not be released.
What has to be true
The one-year gap between killing Echo VR and closing its studio shows the pattern: first the loss-making product, then the team that made it.
The 'not to save money' framing is focus accounting — a $4.5 billion quarterly loss forces concentration decisions regardless of studio quality.
Refusing to open-source Echo VR 'to keep the team focused' looks worse in hindsight: the team is gone and the game is still unrecoverable.
What can be applied
Acquired studios die in stages: first their game, then their roadmap, then the team — each step narrated as focus, never as retreat.
Aftermath
As of August 8, 2024, Ready at Dawn was closed with immediate effect, its unannounced project shelved, and Meta declining to comment beyond the budget-constraint rationale attributed to its spokesperson.
