What the business is
Modern Hydrogen builds modular methane pyrolysis reactors that strip carbon out of natural gas or biogas to make clean hydrogen, with solid carbon black as a byproduct.
Starting capital
$32.8 million round led by NextEra Energy with Miura and National Grid Partners, plus returning investors Gates Frontier, IRONGREY, Starlight Ventures, Valo Ventures and Metaplanet; more than $100 million raised to date.
How it started
Modern Electron started in 2015 inside Intellectual Ventures, the Bellevue innovation hub founded by ex-Microsoft researcher Nathan Myhrvold and backed by Bill Gates. Its original technology captured wasted heat from home furnaces and water tanks to make electricity.
What happened
The pivot reused the team's deep thermal and heat-transfer expertise on methane pyrolysis: hydrogen burns cleanly to water vapour, and the captured carbon becomes carbon black for tires, rubber and ink — with experiments adding surplus carbon to concrete and asphalt. About 55 employees carried over, and demo reactors were set to ship to utilities in Q3 2023, with pilot manufacturing planned near Seattle and commercial product targeted for late 2024 or early 2025.
What has to be true
Corporate willingness to adopt clean hydrogen was, in Pan's words, "very substantial" — invigorated by the IRA and hydrogen hubs.
Centralised hydrogen plants leave the transport problem unsolved; modular production at the point of use sidesteps it entirely.
Selling the carbon as carbon black gives pyrolysis a second revenue line most hydrogen competitors lack.
The heat-to-electricity R&D was not wasted: the same high-temperature engineering powers the reactors.
What can be applied
A pivot keeps its deepest asset: the heat-transfer engineering behind a dead product became the moat for a new one — only the application changed.
Aftermath
As of 11 May 2023, Modern Hydrogen planned demo-reactor shipments to two utilities in Q3 2023, a dairy-waste biogas-to-hydrogen project, a pilot manufacturing facility in the Seattle area, and commercial products by late 2024 or early 2025.
