What the business is
Open Design is an Apache-2.0, local-first design workbench for macOS, Windows, Docker and Vercel that reproduces Claude Design's brief-to-artifact loop without shipping its own model or agent: it detects coding-agent CLIs already on the user's machine (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Qwen, OpenClaw, Copilot and others) or connects to any OpenAI-compatible BYOK endpoint, bundles skills, brand-grade design systems and plugins, renders prototypes, decks, mobile UI and documents in a sandboxed preview, and exports HTML, PDF, PPTX and MP4.
How it started
Anthropic released Claude Design on 2026-04-17 (built on Opus 4.7) as a preview that went viral but was paid-only, fully closed, cloud-only and locked to Anthropic's model and skills, with no self-hosting or agent swapping. Around two weeks later, nexu.io founder Tom Huang open-sourced Open Design 0.1.0 on 2026-05-01, positioning it as the open-source alternative with the same artifact-first loop and none of the lock-in.
What happened
Open Design 0.1.0 shipped with 72 brand-level design systems, 31 composable skills and support for 11 coding-agent CLIs, plus a signed macOS app (Apple Silicon), a Windows x64 test build, one-click Vercel deployment and nine interface languages. GitHub adoption was immediate: 13,200 stars by May 2 and 18,200 by May 4 (Tencent Cloud), and by 2026-06-30 the repo reached 72,900 stars, ranking third on Runa Capital's ROSS Q2-2026 star-growth list for open-source startups, where the company is described as China-based with an undisclosed investment from MindWorks.

Background
Anthropic's Claude Design, released 2026-04-17, showed what happens when a large language model stops writing prose and starts delivering finished design artifacts: it went viral, but stayed paid-only, fully closed and cloud-only, bound to Anthropic's model, skills and surface. Users could not self-host it, deploy it elsewhere or swap in another agent.
Nexu Labs, led by nexu.io founder Tom Huang, answered on 2026-05-01 by open-sourcing Open Design 0.1.0 — a local-first, BYOK reimplementation of the same brief, direction, artifact, critique and delivery loop. It deliberately ships no agent: the coding agents already on a user's laptop (Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Qwen, Gemini CLI and others) become the design engine, reading DESIGN.md brand contracts and writing real project files that render in a sandboxed preview.
The release was immediately popular: Yuntoutiao (云头条) counted 13,200 stars and 1,500 forks by May 2, and Tencent Cloud's developer blog reported 18,200 stars five days after release, describing it as 'the real open-source Claude Design killer'. The repo reached 72,900 stars by 2026-06-30, ranking third on Runa Capital's ROSS Q2-2026 star-growth list for open-source startups, which describes Nexu as a China-based company with an undisclosed MindWorks investment.
The bet is that the platformization of AI design — one vendor owning model, skills, data and export — will meet growing resistance from developers and teams who already pay for coding agents and want their data and brand systems to stay local and portable. As of September 2, 2026, Open Design is still live and expanding, with a cloud model service, MCP support for a widening set of coding agents, and growing skill and design-system libraries.
