What the business is
NopeaRide was Kenya's first fully electric taxi service, providing the charging network, driver and rider apps, and sourcing the electric vehicles.
Starting capital
Undisclosed funding raised in 2019; €200,000 from EEP Africa in 2021 for solar charging hubs — a fraction of what it was raising
How it started
Juha Suojanen founded EkoRent Oy in Finland in 2014 to develop solutions based on electric vehicles and solar energy, which led to the 2018 launch of NopeaRide in Kenya as the country's first fully electric taxi service.
What happened
The fleet grew from three vehicles to 70 by the time of closure, with a charging network built across Nairobi after 2019 funding. In 2021 it received €200,000 from EEP Africa — a fraction of what it sought — for more solar charging hubs. COVID crushed ridership, but H1 2022 traffic recovered to pre-pandemic levels and the corporate segment signed contracts with big international companies, some potentially reserving most of Nopea's capacity.
How it ended up
Despite the recovery, EkoRent Oy's insolvency in Finland left the Kenyan unit without growth funding. EkoRent Africa filed for insolvency in Kenya, took the EV fleet off the road, notified staff and corporate clients, and began winding up operations in line with local legislation.
What has to be true
The company died solvent in operations but starved of capital: the parent's Finnish insolvency, not Kenyan demand, ended it.
Owning charging infrastructure multiplied the capital needs just as the corporate segment — its best path to utilization — was landing contracts.
A €200,000 clean-energy grant against an undisclosed but clearly larger funding target shows the gap between ambition and available climate finance.
What can be applied
Owning the whole EV stack — fleet, chargers, apps — is capital-hungry in exactly the way a startup with no lead investor cannot survive; the business worked, the balance sheet didn't.
Aftermath
As of November 29, 2022, NopeaRide's fleet was off the road, EkoRent Africa was in insolvency proceedings in Kenya, and the operation was being wound up under local legislation.
