How it started
Kevin Lu (ex-AWS, Stanford HAI researcher) and Bach Tran (ex-Addepar) founded Orchids in 2025 inside YC's Winter 2025 batch, betting that the app layer would move from templates to agents.

Orchids launched 1.0 on Product Hunt October 13, 2025 and took #1 of the day with 697 upvotes. The team then pivoted to Bud, an agent with a computer that works from web, text, or Telegram, browses the web, builds and codes, and runs autonomously.
How it ended up
On July 7, 2026 Figma announced it acquired the Bud team; both Bud and Orchids shut down by July 18, 2026 and users were told to migrate projects.
Background
Orchids launched in October 2025 as 'The AI Full Stack Engineer': a chat interface that plans, writes, and runs an entire app. On its Product Hunt debut it hit #1 of the day with 697 upvotes, the strongest launch of that day, and the YC Winter 2025 team looked like an early winner of the prompt-to-software race.
The bet was that conversation, not dashboards, would become the default way to build software. Co-founders Kevin Lu and Bach Tran built Orchids inside YC's Winter 2025 batch to sit between simple AI website builders and complex full-stack development, letting users spin up mobile, web, Slack, and browser apps by talking to an AI engineer.
Within months the team pivoted to Bud, an 'agent with a computer' that browses the web, builds and codes, produces research and documents, and runs autonomously from web, text, or Telegram. In July 2026 Figma acquired the Bud team; both Bud and Orchids were shut down by July 18, 2026 as the team moved into Figma's AI-prototyping push.
The deal was not disclosed, but it was Figma's second small AI-team acquisition as it bets on the design canvas becoming the place where agent-built software is inspected and edited.
