Pulpos' WhatsApp-fiado bet: 5,000 sellers, US$5M Dalus-led round

Mexican POS startup digitizes the informal store credit small retailers already run; US$5M Dalus-led round after 5,000+ active sellers.

Pulpos

The betThat Mexico's small retailers already run a shadow-credit economy and will adopt software that digitizes it if it lives where they already operate: WhatsApp.Live

What the business is

Pulpos is a Mexican cloud point-of-sale and management platform for small and medium retailers: sales, inventory, costs, margins and store-to-customer credit in one system, with digital catalogs and storefronts and WhatsApp as the main channel merchants use.

Starting capitalUS$5 million round announced April 2026, led by Dalus Capital with Impact Ventures, Daedalus and ALIVE Ventures; a previous US$4 million round in April 2024 included Andreessen Horowitz, H20 Capital Innovation, Lititude and Newtopia.

How it started

Founded in 2023 by Franco Silvetti, Frank Martin and Lucas Cortés, Pulpos set out to serve Mexico's independent retailers, who were largely ignored by traditional banking. A study of more than 5,000 merchants documented that 43% of sales were paid in cash, 27% through direct credit between business and client with no paperwork or guarantees, and 8 of 10 supplier purchases settled on terms of one day to a week; cofounder Frank Martin argued that small businesses had built their own financial rules instead of waiting for the formal system.

What happened

After a US$4 million round in April 2024 that included Andreessen Horowitz, Pulpos grew to more than 5,000 active sellers, mainly in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. In April 2026 it announced a US$5 million round led by Dalus Capital with Impact Ventures, Daedalus and ALIVE Ventures, aimed at integrating AI agents into WhatsApp through the point of sale: assistants able to respond to customers, remind about debts, issue receipts and update inventory without human intervention.

How it ended up

Still running and expanding: with the Dalus-led round, Pulpos is extending the platform and pushing AI into micro-businesses, a segment where adoption hovers around 0.1% versus more than 17% in large Mexican corporations, according to Centro México Digital figures cited by Cronista.

Background

Pulpos's bet is that Mexico's small retailers do not need to be taught formal finance — they already run a shadow-credit economy of their own. Founded in 2023 by Franco Silvetti, Frank Martin and Lucas Cortés, the startup sells a cloud point-of-sale system that records sales, inventory, costs, margins and the direct credit a store extends to its customers, with WhatsApp as the channel merchants use to run the business.

The thesis rests on a study of more than 5,000 Mexican merchants: 43% of sales paid in cash, 27% through informal store-to-client credit with no paperwork, and 8 of 10 supplier purchases settled on terms of one day to a week. Pulpos concluded the informal financial circuit already works — it just runs blind, without records of inventory, debtors or which client deserves better terms.

Capital followed the evidence: a US$4 million round in April 2024 included Andreessen Horowitz, and by April 2026 Pulpos served more than 5,000 active sellers, mainly in Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. A US$5 million round led by Dalus Capital with Impact Ventures, Daedalus and ALIVE Ventures funds the next step: AI agents inside WhatsApp that answer customers, remind about debts, issue receipts and update inventory without human help, attacking a micro-business AI adoption rate of roughly 0.1%.

What has to be true

  • The market evidence was primary: a 5,000-merchant study documenting 43% cash sales, 27% informal direct credit and supplier terms of one day to a week, published alongside the 2026 round.
  • Instead of forcing merchants onto new tools, Pulpos operates where they already work — WhatsApp — lowering the adoption barrier for shop owners who never used enterprise software.
  • The product digitizes existing trust rather than displacing it with bank products, matching how the informal economy actually finances itself.
  • Capital concentration signals conviction: a US$4 million round including Andreessen Horowitz in 2024, then a US$5 million Dalus-led round in 2026 as the seller base passed 5,000.

What can be applied

Digitize the system people already run instead of replacing it: record the informal store credit merchants trust, then layer AI onto WhatsApp, the channel they already use.

Aftermath

As of September 4, 2026, Pulpos was operating with more than 5,000 active sellers across Mexico City, Monterrey and Guadalajara. Following the April 2026 US$5 million round led by Dalus Capital, the company was integrating AI agents into WhatsApp through its point-of-sale platform and expanding its presence in Mexican cities with localized merchant support; its longer-term pitch is that AI automation can reach micro-businesses whose adoption of such tools is still near 0.1%.
