Roo Code was an open-source AI coding agent for VS Code — a fork of Cline that added agentic autonomy (modes, MCP servers, model-agnostic setup) so developers could delegate coding tasks inside the editor.
How it started
Roo Code emerged in late 2024 as a fork of Cline, the open-source AI coding agent, and grew fast by shipping agentic features inside VS Code. The team behind it built Roo Code Cloud and a Router so agents could also run remotely across Slack, GitHub and Linear, turning a single extension into a small product suite.
What happened
By early 2026 the extension had roughly 3 million installs and a large contributor base, and the project had become a reference point in the open-source coding-agent race — so much so that Kilo Code itself started as a fork of Roo Code. Internally, however, CEO and co-founder Matt Rubens said the team was already moving its own engineering work out of the IDE, running agents in remote cloud environments that opened fixes, ran the app and verified output before handing off completed work.
How it ended up
On 2026-04-22 the company announced the shutdown: the VS Code extension, Cloud and Router services ended May 15, 2026, with unused balances refunded and the GitHub repository archived read-only. The team redirected users to Cline and the community fork ZooCode and went all-in on Roomote, a cloud-based agent that takes a prompt and carries tasks end-to-end across Slack, GitHub and Linear.
Background
Roo Code was an open-source AI coding agent for VS Code, forked from Cline in late 2024. It differentiated on agent autonomy — modes for architecture, debugging and asks, MCP server support, and model-agnostic setup — and quickly became one of the most influential open-source coding agents of 2025, reaching roughly 3 million VS Code installs and about 23,000 GitHub stars.
The bet that defined the company was the one it made at the end: in April 2026, CEO and co-founder Matt Rubens announced that Roo Code's extension, Cloud and Router services would shut down on May 15, 2026, because the team no longer believed in IDE-based coding. Rubens said his own engineers had already moved most work out of the editor — agents opened fixes, ran the application and verified their output, leaving developers to review finished PRs. 'We made the call not because Roo Code failed, but because the world it served would cease to exist,' he said.
The company redirected users to Cline and the community fork ZooCode, refunded unused balances, and pivoted to Roomote, a cloud-based agent that runs tasks end-to-end across Slack, GitHub and Linear. The GitHub repository was archived read-only on May 15, 2026, and the team moved on to building Roomote, then on a waiting list.
What has to be true

Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02, RooCodeInc/Roo-Code remains archived and read-only, and roocode.com redirects to the Roomote product, which is still in early access with a waiting list. The community forks it handed users to — Cline, ZooCode and Kilo Code — continue to ship, and Kilo Code (itself a Roo fork) has positioned itself as the successor.
