Genius Teacher was founded in 2016 by Housing.com cofounder Advitiya Sharma together with Shashank Pachore and Ruturaj Atre, building quiz-based K-12 learning apps equipped with AI technology for classrooms.

Sharma said the startup had offers from institutional investors but felt 'there could be a bigger game to be played by joining forces with Schoolnet'. The all-stock deal makes him Schoolnet's chief growth officer. Schoolnet said the buyout taps Genius Teacher's market presence to reach over 10,000 private schools in the next three years, and it plans to build an AI-led teacher and student app to improve learning outcomes. The deal landed amid an edtech consolidation wave: Adda247 acquired Ekagrata Eduserv and Allen Career Institute acquired Doubtnut, while 24 Indian edtech startups laid off more than 14,616 employees over two years and players like Lido, Udayy, Supen Learn and DUX Education shut down.
