Supabase's open-source Postgres bet: 100k GitHub stars, $10.5B valuation
Supabase bet developers wanted Firebase-style DX on real Postgres, open source: from YC S20 to 100k GitHub stars and a $10.5B Series F in six years.
Supabase
What the business is
Supabase is a hosted, open-source backend platform: a Postgres database plus authentication, auto-generated APIs, file storage, realtime and vector search — deployable in the cloud or self-hosted.
Starting capital:YC S20 alum; ~$398M total raised through the $200M Series D (2025-04); $100M Series E at $5B (2025-10); $500M Series F at $10.5B led by GIC (2026-06).
How it started
Paul Copplestone and Ant Wilson founded Supabase in 2020 (YC S20): Firebase showed how easy a backend could be, but its lock-in bothered developers, so the bet was the same ease on Postgres, the database developers already trusted. It started as two people and a Postgres instance.
What happened
Growth rode open source and YC word of mouth. September 2024 brought an $80M round (Peak XV, Craft Ventures; ~$900M per PitchBook); in April 2025 Accel led a $200M Series D at $2B with Coatue, Y Combinator and Felicis; October 2025 brought $100M at $5B led by Accel and Peak XV with Figma Ventures. The vibe-coding wave made Supabase the default backend for builders like Lovable: 'Supabase for Platforms' customers grew 370% in six months, databases 600% year over year, and AI agents now deploy most new databases on the platform.
How it ended up
On 2026-06-04 Supabase announced a $500M Series F led by GIC at a $10.5B valuation, with user base more than doubled since the Series E; the project passed 100k GitHub stars in April 2026 and counts 8M+ developers.
Background
Supabase is a hosted open-source backend platform built on Postgres: developers get a database plus auth, auto-generated APIs, file storage, realtime and vector search, deployable in the cloud or self-hosted. Founders Paul Copplestone and Ant Wilson launched it in 2020 (YC S20) after seeing Firebase's ease — and its lock-in.
The bet was that developers would choose the same convenience on real, unmodified Postgres, the database they already trusted, and that an open-source stack would win over a proprietary backend. The company assembled PostgREST, GoTrue, pgvector and other proven open-source pieces instead of writing its own infrastructure, and marketed the promise 'build in a weekend: scale to millions.'
The bet compounded: an $80M round in September 2024, a $200M Series D at $2B in April 2025, $100M at $5B in October 2025, and finally a $500M Series F at $10.5B in June 2026 led by GIC. GitHub stars went from 81k in April 2025 to 100k in April 2026, and developers grew from 1.7M to over 8M in the same window as AI app builders — including Lovable — made Supabase their default backend.
What has to be true
- Building on Postgres gave Supabase instant credibility with developers who needed real relational semantics, not a proprietary lock-in.
- Open source was the wedge: anyone could self-host, audit or extend the platform, turning stars and forks into a distribution channel.
- The AI coding boom chose the path of least resistance, and Supabase's 'vibe database management' made it the default backend for agents building apps.
- Each funding round landed months after the last, showing that community growth — not pitch decks — drove valuation from $900M to $10.5B in under two years.
What can be applied
Bet on the technology developers already trust and keep it open source: when an AI boom chose a default backend, Supabase's community velocity — not marketing — turned into a $10.5B outcome.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02 Supabase is live and scaling: the Series F funds growth, employee liquidity and open-source/Postgres tooling, including Multigres, a preview scaling layer for teams that outgrow a single Postgres instance. The platform reports roughly 10 million developers, 100k+ GitHub stars, and over 60% of new databases on the platform being launched by AI tools; Felicis and Coatue publicly credit its GitHub growth curve as among the fastest they have backed.
