Tana bets AI needs a knowledge graph; wins Product Hunt 2025 Product of the Year
Three Norwegians, including a Google Wave builder, bet a structured knowledge graph beats notes apps for AI-era work; $25M, 160K waitlist.
Tana
What the business is
AI-powered knowledge-graph workspace that turns notes, meetings and voice memos into connected, structured data AI can organize and act on.
Starting capital:$11M seed from Lars Rasmussen (Google Maps), Arash Ferdowsi (Dropbox), Siqi Chen (Runway), Olivier Pomel (Datadog) and La Famiglia (now General Catalyst); $14M Series A led by Tola Capital at a $100M post-money valuation — $25M total.
How it started
Founded in 2020 by three Norwegians: CEO Tarjei Vassbotn and CPO Grim Iversen (ex-Google, a senior builder of Google Wave) plus COO Olav Kriken. They first built their own models, then pivoted to model-agnostic when GPT-3 showed the model race was unwinnable — a pivot that cost nearly four years before the closed beta.
What happened
After a nine-month beta with 30,000 testers, Tana emerged from stealth on Feb 3, 2025 with $25M raised and a 160K+ waitlist. Its Product Hunt launch hit #1 with ~1.7k upvotes and swept the daily, weekly and monthly boards; TechCrunch framed it as a serious Notion challenger backed by Google Maps and Dropbox founders.
How it ended up
Still scaling: Tana was named Product Hunt's 2025 Product of the Year in February 2026; in March 2026 it split into two products — Tana Outliner for individuals and a new team-and-agent knowledge-graph product.
Background
Tana is an AI-native workspace built on a knowledge graph: notes, meetings and voice memos get transcribed, connected and structured so AI can organize them and act on them. Its bet is that flat notes apps are the wrong substrate for the AI era — a structured graph that mirrors how people think is what lets AI become a coworker instead of a search box.
The founders came to that bet with battle scars: CPO Grim Iversen was a senior builder of Google Wave, the collaboration tool that failed despite Google's backing, and angel Lars Rasmussen built both Google Maps and Google Wave. Founded in 2020, Tana first tried building its own models, then pivoted to being model-agnostic once GPT-3 showed the model race was unwinnable — spending nearly four years before opening a closed beta.
The payoff came at launch: 160K+ waitlist members, 30K beta testers, a Feb 3, 2025 Product Hunt launch that hit #1 with ~1.7k upvotes and swept daily, weekly and monthly boards, and $25M from Tola Capital, Lightspeed and founder angels. In February 2026 Tana was named Product Hunt's 2025 Product of the Year, and it has since split into two products: Tana Outliner for individuals and a new agentic knowledge graph for teams.
What has to be true
- The Google Wave lineage gave the founders a decade-old lesson in collaboration software, and they believed LLMs finally made structured, connected notes useful.
- Pivoting to model-agnostic early avoided the model race; Tana bet its durable edge was data structure, not model quality.
- A 160K waitlist and a #1 Product Hunt launch showed demand before the product even opened to everyone.
- A knowledge graph compounds as a moat: the more structure users pour in, the better the AI gets and the higher the switching cost.
What can be applied
Structure beats page count: Tana bet that a knowledge graph — not another notes app — is what AI needs to organize work, and the product whose data is machine-usable wins the AI-era workflow.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Tana is privately held on its $25M and expanding: the new team-focused knowledge graph reached the community in May 2026, adding agents, voice-driven meetings and a new identity, while Tana Outliner keeps serving individual users. It continues to position itself as the structured-data alternative to Notion, betting that AI agents will need precisely structured context to be useful in real work.
