TV Time: 25M-user TV tracker killed in 2026 as Whip Media pivots to AI
Free social TV-tracking app with 25M+ registered accounts is discontinued July 15, 2026, after owner Whip Media pivots to AI tools.
TV Time
What the business is
A free app for tracking TV shows and movies with community features; its 25M-user viewing data powered Whip Media's analytics business.
How it started
Launched in Paris in 2011 as WhipClip and rebuilt in 2014 as TV Time: users log, rate and discuss shows. The bet was that streaming would fragment viewing across many apps and platforms, leaving room for one neutral tracker and community (Whip Media interview).
What happened
TV Time acquired data company Mediamorph and renamed itself Whip Media, merging consumer viewing data with industry transaction data; clients included Disney, Warner Bros., Hulu, NBCU and Paramount. Lender Blue Torch Capital acquired Whip Media in early 2025 and steered it toward AI-powered workflow tools such as Helix (TechCrunch).
How it ended up
On July 1, 2026 Whip Media told users in-app that TV Time would end July 15, 2026: the free app was no longer sustainable and there was not enough demand for a paid one. The app was removed from app stores and user data scheduled for deletion, with a GDPR-compliant export tool offered (TechCrunch; Cord Cutters News).
Background
TV Time was a free app for tracking TV shows and movies, launched in Paris in 2011 as WhipClip and rebuilt in 2014 into the tracking service. Users logged episodes, rated series and discussed them in a community that became one of the larger TV-fan platforms online — 25 million-plus registered accounts and 26.4 million lifetime installs per Appfigures (TechCrunch; Cord Cutters News).
The company's real bet was data. TV Time acquired data firm Mediamorph and renamed itself Whip Media, combining consumer viewing behavior with industry transaction data, and sold that intelligence to studios and streamers including Disney, Warner Bros., Hulu and NBCU (Whip Media interview). The app itself stayed free; its job was to feed the data engine. In early 2025 lender Blue Torch Capital acquired Whip Media and steered it toward AI-powered workflow tools such as Helix (TechCrunch).
On July 1, 2026 Whip Media announced in-app that TV Time would end on July 15: 'it was no longer sustainable to continue operating the service as a free app, and there was not enough demand for a paid app.' The app was pulled from the App Store and Google Play, user data was scheduled for deletion after a GDPR-compliant export window, and one of the larger online TV communities went dark (TechCrunch; The Verge; Cord Cutters News).
What has to be true
- The free app never had to be profitable while Whip Media sold its data — but the moment the new owner stopped valuing that pipeline, the app had no revenue model left.
- The shutdown notice itself concedes the product economics: no paid demand, no sustainable free model after 15 years.
- A leveraged lender buying the company for its AI pivot is an ownership mismatch: users cared about the community, the owner cared about Helix.
- It shows an acquired consumer product can be killed for strategic cleanliness rather than failure — the app still had tens of thousands of new downloads in its final month (TechCrunch).
What can be applied
A free consumer app can feed a profitable data business while having no economics of its own: when the owner's strategy changes, 25M users don't protect it from a 14-day shutdown.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02 the TV Time app is offline (removed from stores July 15, 2026); Whip Media says collected data will not be used commercially and will be deleted, and it continues with its Helix AI workflow product for streaming analytics and supply-chain orchestration. Rival trackers such as Trakt reported increased interest as users migrated (Cord Cutters News).
