How it started
After Databricks bought his AI startup MosaicML for about $1.3B in 2023, Naveen Rao — previously Intel's AI group VP — quietly started Unconventional AI in late 2025. In October TechCrunch reported he was seeking up to $1B at a $5B valuation for a computer 'as efficient as biology'; he confirmed the name on X.
What happened
On December 8, 2025 the company came out of stealth with $475M in seed capital at a $4.5B post-money valuation, led by Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed, with Lux, DCVC, Databricks and Jeff Bezos participating. Rao told Bloomberg it was the first installment toward up to $1B. Its launch post said it is 'building silicon circuits that demonstrate similar non-linear dynamics' to neurons; a job posting sought an accelerator 1,000x more efficient than current silicon.
How it ended up
Still running. In June 2026 it released its first models — the Un-0 series, six image-generation networks built from 1,024 to 16,384 simulated oscillators trained on CIFAR-10 and ImageNet-64 — saying they match the quality of leading conventional image generators at their debut. No physical chip has shipped.

When an industry hits a hard physical ceiling like energy, the biggest lever is changing the substrate — the architecture, not the scale — and investors will pay a premium for a credible bet on it.
Aftermath
As of June 2026 Unconventional AI is still in early R&D and has shipped no hardware. Its Un-0 series showed an oscillator-based image model matching early conventional generators, and the company says future advances could significantly cut AI power use. Rao has said the seed round may grow toward $1B, which would make it one of the largest ever at this stage.
