How it started
Founder and CEO Liu Yang led Feishu's spreadsheet team, building pivot tables and charts; as an earlier insurance-company data analyst he had watched users download data into Excel because only a spreadsheet was flexible enough. In his spare time he built Luckysheet (16k+ GitHub stars), then founded Univer to go further: an embeddable, self-developed spreadsheet engine.
What happened
Univer shipped 100+ plugins — pivot tables, charts, formulas, collaboration, import/export — plus a headless Node runtime so agents can compute without UI. In September 2025 the team released Capalyze (scrape → ask → visualize) as a validation product: it took #1 Product of the Day on 2025-09-17 with 827 upvotes, finished September #3 with 1,228 votes, and 36Kr says the overseas version also topped the weekly board, passed 100,000 users, and won paying customers such as Novartis and Samsung. In December 2025 Univer scored 68.86% on SpreadsheetBench, ahead of ChatGPT Agent and Excel Copilot.

Background
Univer is an open-source SDK for building spreadsheet, document and presentation experiences, founded by Liu Yang, the former technical lead of Feishu's spreadsheet. Its bet is that AI-native spreadsheets are not for humans to click: the engine runs headless in Node so agents can compute, while Capalyze — an AI product that scrapes web data into live spreadsheets and answers with charts and insights — validates the engine in public.
The route was chosen from experience. As an insurance data analyst, Liu Yang watched users download data into Excel because only spreadsheets were flexible enough; as Feishu's spreadsheet lead he saw the limits of copilot-style AI. Univer self-developed its engine — reading Microsoft's 5,000-page Open XML specification took half a year — and shipped 100+ plugins, arguing that formulas are Turing-complete computing that agents should drive.
Capalyze launched on September 17, 2025 and took #1 Product of the Day with 827 upvotes and 268 comments, finishing #3 in the month with 1,228 votes. Per 36Kr it also topped the weekly board and passed 100,000 users, and in December 2025 Univer scored 68.86% on SpreadsheetBench, ahead of ChatGPT Agent and Excel Copilot.
Commercially, the company runs open source plus a paid Pro extension layer; paying customers include Novartis and Samsung, and Capalyze gained a WeChat Mini-Program version for China. Financing so far is a seed round from individual investors.
What has to be true
- Selling infrastructure instead of an app: the SDK embeds into OA, ERP and BI workflows, while Capalyze proves the engine and feeds real usage back into it.
- Headless-first is the sharp bet: formulas are Turing-complete, so agents — not humans — run the analysis and hand results to people to review, flipping the copilot framing.
- Open source pre-sold trust and distribution: Luckysheet's 16k stars and Univer's 27.5k stars gave a public proof of engineering before any paid product existed.
- A benchmark gave the sales story teeth: topping SpreadsheetBench (68.86%) ahead of ChatGPT Agent and Excel Copilot is an objective claim an enterprise buyer can check.
