Vozo's practical-AI bet: video translation to ~$1M ARR and PH top ranks
Google X alum Zhou Changyin's Vozo translates, dubs and lip-syncs existing videos; it hit ~$1M ARR in six months and still tops Product Hunt in 2026.
Vozo (Vistring Technology)
What the business is
Vozo sells AI web tools that rewrite, translate, dub and lip-sync existing videos for creators, marketers and SMBs that need one video to speak many languages, sold as subscription software.
Starting capital:About $6–7M pre-Series A from Linear Capital, Sequoia Capital China's seed fund and angel investors, per the founder's 2025-04-12 interview.
How it started
Zhou Changyin, a former Google X researcher who helped build Google Glass imaging technology, returned to China in 2021 to pursue 'freedom of video expression'. Two earlier creator apps (a teleprompter-camera app and its overseas version, Blink) generated roughly $6M ARR, funding the team while it experimented with generative AI and ran a joint research lab with a former professor.
What happened
The research lab produced interesting models, but by 2023 they could not be productized, and the team was torn between a research road and an application road; in October 2023 it publicly dropped pure research and made every R&D project start from a product need. On 2024-07-20 Vozo launched Rewrite, which topped Product Hunt for three consecutive days. Seeing that most Rewrite users were translating, the team shipped translation in October 2024 and launched Vozo Video Translator on Product Hunt on 2024-11-19 (987 upvotes, #2 of the Day), which the founder says also took PH's #1 of the month; lip-sync and photo lip-sync followed in early 2025. Funding of roughly $6–7M came from Linear Capital, Sequoia China's seed fund and angels, and the team grew past 40 people. On 2026-03-10, the new Visual Translate feature - translating text inside videos - ranked #2 of the Day with 614 votes.
How it ended up
Still operating: as of 2026-09-02 Vozo continues to ship translation, dubbing and lip-sync features, and says it is merging its older creator apps with Vozo under one brand; no shutdown or exit.
Background
Vozo is an AI video tool built on a contrarian bet: generic video-generation models would never be a durable moat, so the company should not chase text-to-video, but instead own the practical jobs around existing video - rewriting, translating, dubbing and lip-syncing clips for creators and businesses that publish across languages.
Founder Zhou Changyin is a former Google X researcher who helped build Google Glass imaging and returned to China in 2021. Two earlier creator apps produced around $6M ARR and funded the company while it ran a joint frontier research lab; but by 2023 the lab's models could not be productized, and in October 2023 Vozo pivoted so all R&D starts from product needs. On 2024-07-20 it launched Vozo Rewrite, which topped Product Hunt for three consecutive days and, with no ad budget, reached about $1M ARR within six months.
Usage data then steered the roadmap: most Rewrite users were translating, so Vozo built translation (October 2024), then lip-sync and photo lip-sync in early 2025. Its Vozo Video Translator launch on 2024-11-19 drew 987 upvotes (#2 of the Day), and the founder says it took Product Hunt's #1 of the month. Roughly $6–7M in pre-Series A funding came from Linear Capital, Sequoia China's seed fund and angels; the team passed 40 people. On 2026-03-10 the new Visual Translate feature, which translates on-screen text inside videos, ranked #2 of the Day with 614 votes.
What has to be true
- Sora-era hype pushed founders toward text-to-video, but Vozo reasoned that generic models would commoditize and therefore never be a defensible product layer.
- First-hand usage data set the roadmap: most Rewrite users were translating, which is why translation became the core before lip-sync and photo lip-sync.
- Capital efficiency was deliberate: only ~$6–7M raised, 40+ people, positive group cash flow from older apps (~$6M ARR), and ~$1M ARR with no paid marketing.
- Product Hunt was treated as cold start plus feedback loop: the founder says rank chasing is operational, but the ~1,000 users per day it brought were enough to iterate toward product-market fit.
What can be applied
For AI startups the moat is about jobs, not models: Vozo left frontier research to giants and won by owning one practical job - making a video speak another language - with polish and iteration.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-02 Vozo is an operating AI-video toolmaker of about 40 people. The founder says group cash flow is positive because the two older creator apps (~$6M ARR) cover costs, so Vozo's own revenue is profit; the company is folding those apps into a single Vozo-branded product with shared subscriptions. Its open wager remains that vertical video-localization tools hold up as general video models improve.
