x1 bets guided steps, not one-prompt magic, will ship iPhone apps
Guided AI builder x1 — questions first, screen review, milestone builds, App Store prep — hit PH #1 of the day with 495 upvotes.
x1
What the business is
x1 is an AI iPhone app builder that separates creation into stages: the user describes an idea or uploads a file, x1 asks clarifying questions and produces a product plan covering target user, screen map, core flows and milestones; screens are reviewed in a visual canvas before each milestone is generated and run through x1's own QA pass. It builds React Native apps previewable on an iPhone and submits through the user's own Apple Developer account, preparing screenshots, listing copy and TestFlight/App Store files, with payments, subscriptions, databases, authentication and AI services configurable inside the workflow.
How it started
Manil Lakabi, previously on the generative AI team at Scale AI and the Facebook Reality Labs team at Meta, founded x1 in 2024 after repeatedly seeing people create an impressive AI demo and then get trapped in prompt-and-fix loops when they added authentication, payments, permissions and data. x1 went through YC's Fall 2024 batch as a five-person team based in San Francisco.
What happened
The product grew from the thesis that the prompt box is not the final interface for building software: x1 asks the important questions first, turns answers into a plan, lets users design screens before development, builds in milestones and verifies each step. On 2026-08-26 it launched on Product Hunt as 'Lovable for iPhone apps' and took #1 Product of the Day with 495 upvotes and 75 comments; RuntimeWire's analysis credited the bet on planning, project memory and App Store preparation becoming the valuable layer as users try to ship and maintain AI-built apps.
How it ended up
Still live as of 2026-09-05: x1 remains iOS-only with Android support planned but no timetable, and source export — needed to continue development outside x1 — is described by the team as under development and 'not too far out'. The free 100-credit allowance and paid monthly plans are publicly listed, but no customer case studies or revenue figures have been published.
Background
x1 is an AI app builder for iPhone apps, pitched as 'Lovable for iPhone apps'. Instead of generating an entire app from one prompt, it guides users through stages: feasibility check, clarifying questions, a product plan covering target user and screen map, visual review of designed screens, milestone-by-milestone builds with x1's own QA pass, and finally screenshots, listing copy and submission through the user's Apple Developer account.
The bet is that the hard part of an AI-built app is not the first generated screen but everything after it — authentication, payments, user data, permissions, subscriptions and later feature changes. x1 tries to capture product decisions before generation and carry them through design and engineering, so a change to one screen updates dependent flows instead of starting a new prompt-and-fix loop.
Founder Manil Lakabi, ex-Scale AI and ex-Meta FRL, started x1 in 2024 and took it through YC's Fall 2024 batch in San Francisco with a five-person team. The product launched on Product Hunt on 2026-08-26 and finished #1 Product of the Day with 495 upvotes and 75 comments, hunted by Lakabi and Garry Tan.
As of 2026-09-05 x1 is live and iOS-only: new accounts receive 100 credits without a credit card, monthly plans cost $20/$50/$100 for 1,000/2,500/5,000 credits, and publishing to TestFlight and the App Store starts with the paid Starter plan. Android support and source export are planned but not yet shipped.
What has to be true
- One-prompt builders make the first screen cheap and everything after it expensive; x1 moves the cost into planning, where decisions are still cheap to change.
- A guided workflow suits the customer who cannot act as product manager, designer, engineer and QA lead at once — the person AI app builders newly bring to the market.
- iOS-only focus means one design language, one review process and one distribution channel, and iPhone users give the builder a stronger path to monetization.
- Keeping the workflow closed for now lets x1 control the project memory and QA pass it claims as its edge; source export is promised but not yet delivered.
- The credit-based pricing makes the guided process part of cost control — decisions caught in planning should mean fewer generated revisions later.
What can be applied
When AI writes the code, value moves to the decisions around it — planning, project memory, QA and release prep. Narrowing to iPhone gave x1 one strict pipeline to master instead of a platform sprawl.
Aftermath
As of 2026-09-05 x1 is live and taking new accounts, with a free 100-credit allowance and paid plans at $20/$50/$100 per month. No customer case studies, usage or revenue figures have been published; the examples page shows demo concepts rather than shipped apps. Two limits remain: no source export yet (the launch team calls it 'not too far out'), and Android support is planned without a timetable. Whether the guided workflow prevents prompt-and-fix loops on complex products, and whether Apple's review lets the 'idea to App Store' promise hold, are the open questions.
