Zapper's DeFi-dashboard bet: 2M monthly users, $13B processed, shut down Aug 2026

DeFi portfolio tracker with 2M+ monthly users and $13B+ peak volume announced an orderly shutdown for Aug 3, 2026, after seven years.

Zapper

The betOne dashboard for every DeFi position would become the front door of decentralized finance — users free first, monetize later with tokens and premium services. No longer exists

What the business is

Free dashboard and mobile apps that let crypto users track portfolios, positions, yields and new protocols across decentralized finance.

Starting capital$16.5M total: a $1.5M seed after the 2019 hackathon win and a $15M Series A in May 2021 led by Framework Ventures with Mark Cuban, Coinbase Ventures and Sound Ventures (Cointelegraph).

How it started

Founded in 2019 by Seb Audet and co-founders. After winning a Kyber DeFi hackathon, Zapper raised a $1.5M seed and built the app into a standard tool for tracking positions, liquidity pools and yield farms across DeFi protocols (Cointelegraph).

What happened

Zapper scaled to more than 2 million monthly active users and $13B+ in processed transactions at its peak, raising a $15M Series A in May 2021 from Framework Ventures, Mark Cuban, Coinbase Ventures and Sound Ventures. In April 2025 attackers hijacked its domain in a social-engineering attack and served phishing pages to users; in 2024 the team had been planning a ZAP token to extend the ecosystem (Cointelegraph; stock3).

How it ended up

On July 8, 2026 CEO Seb Audet announced on X that Zapper would wind down: zapper.xyz, mobile apps and API services all shut down on August 3, 2026. 'We evaluated a number of different options... an orderly wind down is the best course of action'; when asked why, he said 'At the end of the day, the market decides' (Cointelegraph).

Background

Zapper, founded in 2019 after winning Kyber's DeFi hackathon, was one of the defining consumer apps of DeFi's first boom: a free dashboard that aggregated a user's positions, yields, liquidity and new protocols in one place. It grew to more than 2 million monthly active users and processed $13B+ in transactions at its peak (Cointelegraph).

The business model was deferred. Zapper raised a $1.5M seed and a $15M Series A in May 2021 led by Framework Ventures with Mark Cuban, Coinbase Ventures and Sound Ventures, but the product stayed free, with monetization planned later — including a ZAP token floated in 2024. In April 2025 the platform's domain was hijacked in a social-engineering attack that served phishing pages to users, eroding trust at a bad time (Cointelegraph; stock3).

On July 8, 2026 CEO Seb Audet announced an orderly wind-down: the website, mobile apps and API would shut down on August 3, 2026. Audet said the team had evaluated many options and that 'an orderly wind down is the best course of action,' adding 'at the end of the day, the market decides' — as crypto sentiment hit lows and similar platforms (TapTools, Botanix, Nifty Gateway, Rodeo) also sunset in 2026 (Cointelegraph).

What has to be true

  • Zapper had users and volume but no durable revenue: dashboards aggregate other protocols' products, so the community had little reason to pay.
  • Its monetization plans kept moving: a 2024 token idea never became an engine, and the free product's economics were never solved.
  • The April 2025 domain hijack damaged trust in the very surface users trusted with wallet connections.
  • The 2025-2026 downturn cut demand and follow-on funding, making a controlled shutdown the least-bad option per its own CEO.

What can be applied

Being the default dashboard for an ecosystem is not a business: Zapper routed $13B of activity but sat between users and protocols — when the market cooled, there was nothing left to charge for.

Aftermath

As of 2026-09-02 all Zapper services — zapper.xyz, mobile apps and APIs — are offline following the August 3, 2026 shutdown; API users received transition guidance. The shutdown was part of a wave of 2026 crypto-platform sunsets including TapTools, Botanix, Dmail, Nifty Gateway and Rodeo (Cointelegraph).
