AgentMail was founded in 2025 in San Francisco by Haakam Aujla (CEO), Michael Kim (CTO) and Adi Singh, and went through Y Combinator's Summer 2025 batch. The founding claim: email is the ideal interface for long-running agents — asynchronous, multithreaded, rich text and files, with identity and authentication already built in. The founders' trigger was the Gmail API, which cannot support autonomous agents: no programmatic inbox creation, rate and sending limits, OAuth per inbox, and per-seat pricing. They launched with a Launch HN post on 2026-01-29.

Launch HN hit the front page with 169 points and 169 comments and drew a long, sceptical thread — readers argued agents should use modern protocols instead of email, and that inboxes add spam and abuse surface. The company kept building: deterministic parsing, threading, attachments, semantic search, webhooks, 'Agent Armor' inbound screening, MCP and SDKs. On 2026-03-10 TechCrunch reported a $6M seed led by General Catalyst with participation from Y Combinator, Phosphor Capital and angels including Paul Graham; the same piece said the user count tripled in the week OpenClaw took off in late January 2026 and quadrupled in February.
