Founder and CEO Eldad Fux started Appwrite as a side project in 2019, frustrated with the manual backend work behind every app — databases, auth, storage — and with teams getting locked into proprietary platforms such as Google's Firebase. By September 2021 two seed rounds closed around $10M total (Ibex/Seedcamp, then Bessemer/Flybridge), as more than 40,000 developers joined the GitHub community within three months.

A $27M Series A led by Tiger Global followed in April 2022 — total funding $37M — with the company citing 150,000+ developers and 550 maintainers and claiming one of the fastest-growing open-source platforms on GitHub. In May 2025, Appwrite Sites, positioned as the open-source Vercel alternative, launched on Product Hunt and finished the month ranked #4 with 991 points.
