Better Auth is an open-source TypeScript authentication framework developers embed on the back end, keeping sign-ins, passwords and user data in their own database, with orgs, teams and roles built in and plug-ins to scale.
起因
Bereket Engida, a self-taught programmer in Ethiopia, started coding at 18 after a friend refused to help him build an e-commerce search app. Through remote jobs and a web-analytics product he kept hitting the same pain: every SaaS app needs sign-in, teams, roles and permissions, but Auth0, Firebase and NextAuth were too limited, stored user data externally, and got expensive at scale. When he needed an organization feature none of them offered, he built it from scratch in about two weeks — then scrapped that project to build a better way.

Working mostly from his bedroom in Ethiopia over six months, Engida built the TypeScript framework that became Better Auth and posted it to GitHub in September 2024. Adoption followed quickly: 150,000+ weekly downloads, 15,000+ GitHub stars and 6,000+ Discord members. Better Auth graduated YC's spring 2025 batch and raised about $5M in seed funding from Peak XV (its first direct investment in an African founder), Y Combinator, P1 Ventures and Chapter One. Peak XV said adoption was strong among AI startups needing custom flows tied to proprietary APIs, secure token handling and low cost at scale.
