起因
Cameron and a co-founder first tried to build a citation manager for a Chrome-to-Zotero-to-Emacs research workflow, but conversations with PhDs and postdocs showed every researcher organizes differently. A friend's trouble finding 'cloud documents' pushed them toward a spotlight-style file finder, which already existed. They concluded the browser itself was the bottleneck: research browsing mixed with ordinary web use 'creates a mess', so they built a full browser instead of an extension, which they said would only add noise.

The 2021-09-07 Show HN grew to 1,070 points and 226 comments. Users praised the spatial organization and tree history but pressed the founders on closed source, missing extension and password-manager support, Electron performance and the Mac-only release. In reply the founders laid out a JetBrains-style perpetual license around $50, possibly free later if paid server features emerged, open source if a community formed, and Linux and Windows builds 'less than a month' away. The repository's later configuration shows the project kept shipping — user accounts (Supabase), analytics (Mixpanel) and Apple notarization were added from November 2021 — before the repo moved to the Bonsai-Desk organization.

The distribution repository github.com/hyferg/bonsai-browser-public, by then Bonsai-Desk/bonsai-browser, was archived by its owner on 2022-12-20 with a README stating 'Bonsai Browser is no longer being actively developed'; no funding, revenue or user numbers were ever disclosed in the launch thread.
