Echion bets heavy-duty fleets will pay for 10-minute charging: first UKBIC pilot line user

Echion was spun out of the University of Cambridge in 2017 by Jean de La Verpilliere, building on a decade of lab research on mixed niobium oxides. The company's thesis: graphite anodes limit how fast lithium-ion batteries can charge, and heavy-duty vehicles that must run almost continuously would pay a premium for batteries that refill in minutes rather than hours. CBMM, which produces roughly 85% of the world's niobium, invested in 2021 and became the manufacturing partner.

In June 2024 Echion closed a £29M Series B led by Volta Energy Technologies, with CBMM, BGF, and Cambridge Enterprise Ventures participating, to take XNO into real-world applications at volume. In November 2024 Echion and CBMM inaugurated the world's largest niobium-based anode facility in Araxá, Brazil — 2,000 tonnes of XNO per year, equivalent to about 1 GWh of cells — and the same month Echion raised a further £10M from Barclays Sustainable Impact Capital and BGF. In November 2025 Echion became the first company to use UKBIC's new Flexible Pilot Line, running its anode design through the UK national facility that bridges lab scale and commercial production.

Echion's bet is that the first big battery market for niobium anodes is not cars — it is machines that cannot stop. Spun out of Cambridge University in 2017, the company developed XNO, a niobium-oxide anode that allows lithium-ion cells to charge safely in under ten minutes and cycle more than 10,000 times, trading raw energy density for uptime. Mining trucks, electric trains, and opportunity-charging buses lose money when they sit at a charger, so fast charging and longevity justify a premium material.
The company paired its technology with a strategic partner that removed the supply-chain risk: CBMM, the world's leading niobium producer, invested in 2021 and agreed to build XNO manufacturing capacity. After a £29M Series B led by Volta Energy Technologies in June 2024, Echion and CBMM inaugurated the world's largest niobium-based anode plant in Araxá, Brazil in November 2024 — 2,000 tonnes per year, roughly 1 GWh of cells — and Barclays Sustainable Impact Capital and BGF added £10M the same month.
In November 2025 Echion became the first company to run its material through UKBIC's new Flexible Pilot Line in Coventry, the UK's national battery scale-up facility, testing how to move from pilot volumes toward commercial production. The company says XNO is already in commercial supply and its customers span cell manufacturers and OEMs in rail, mining, and electric-bus markets.
