起因

In 2020 Fly.io believed only 'edgy' apps — video, real-time presence, game servers — truly needed physical locality, and that was what it expected to discuss on its March 2020 Hacker News launch thread. What users actually wanted to talk about was databases. The company concluded that most apps want edge deployment if it is easy: a game-server team will fight tooling until edge works, while an online bookstore team gives up after about two hours, so most CRUD apps end up in one cloud region.

The path required capital, so Fly.io's 2023-06-28 post disclosed $25M from a16z and existing investors including Intel Capital and Dell, then an additional $70M led by EQT Ventures. The money funds what the company says a durable platform needs: an owned hardware fleet (Fly.io has always run on its own servers instead of layering on commodity clouds, arguing hardware is what makes margins work), more regions (19 at launch, 33 by the post), and support and reliability, with further bets on storage, security and new hardware. It also shipped Fly Machines, which make spinning up a VM as straightforward as calling a function.
