Infracost is an open-source cloud cost intelligence company: it parses Terraform, CloudFormation, AWS CDK and Terragrunt to estimate what infrastructure changes will cost, surfaces estimates in terminals, editors, AI coding agents and pull requests, and sells Infracost Cloud for FinOps policies.
起因
Ali, Hassan and Alistair launched the first version of Infracost in February 2021 after concluding that the people purchasing cloud resources are not shown costs upfront, so nobody knows what resources will cost before launching them. The first Show HN (item 26064588) introduced a free open-source CLI that parses Terraform and posts cost diffs in pull requests; the founders said they had lived the same bill shock and pointed to Netflix, Slack and Segment adopting developer-focused cost management.

In the 2022-01-26 Show HN the founders reported the surprise: individual engineers were not pulling the tool in, senior DevOps, SRE and platform teams were integrating it while engineers consumed the pull-request cost comments. By then the community maintained mappings for over 200 resources, integrations covered Spacelift, OPA, GitHub Actions, GitLab and Azure DevOps, and Infracost had partnered with HashiCorp on Terraform Cloud Run Tasks, then in beta. By the 2026-09-05 snapshot the project had become Infracost 2.0: CLI, IDE language-server extensions, Infracost Cloud with tagging and FinOps guardrails, AI coding agent skills, and support for over 1,100 resources across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud.
