Jiva's farmer-services bet ends in 2025: Olam closes agritech, 606 jobs affected
Olam×BCG venture Jiva bet smallholder farming could be served profitably at scale; Olam's de-lever plan closed it in August 2025
Jiva Ag
做的是什么生意
Digital farmer services: Jiva sold agri inputs, offered credit to buy them, gave AI agronomy advice, and bought harvests from smallholder farmers in Indonesia and India
起因
Launched in 2020 as a corporate venture between Olam and BCG Digital Ventures (now BCG X), starting in Indonesia with a separate India product, AgriCentral. The mission was to improve the livelihoods of 500 million smallholder farmers; CEO Ram Mahadevan described the smallholder supply chain as broken and 90% of smallholders earning below living income.
经过
Grew fast on reach: 50,000 farmers added in Indonesia in 2023, three million on AgriCentral in India, advisory to over 10 million farmers, and 500,000+ tonnes of harvest purchased. But delivery required a physical network of agents and retailers, and the business kept needing the parent's money — by H1 2025 Olam booked a S$13.2M impairment tied mainly to Jiva.
结果
On 28 August 2025 Olam Group announced it would close Jiva Ag as part of its Updated 2025 Re-organisation Plan to make the Remaining Olam Group debt-free and divest assets. 606 employees were affected, 531 of them in Indonesia. Olam expects up to US$9M in one-off closure costs in H2 2025.
背景
Jiva was a corporate venture founded in 2020 by Olam Group and BCG Digital Ventures to serve the 500 million smallholder farmers who, in CEO Ram Mahadevan's words, sit inside a broken supply chain. Starting in Indonesia (with a separate India product, AgriCentral), Jiva combined four services: selling agri inputs, financing farmers to buy them, AI-driven agronomy advice, and buying harvests at fair prices.
The distribution bet was physical plus digital: village-level entrepreneurs ('Sahabat Jiva') and agri-retailers carried the service into rural communities through mobile apps, because Mahadevan argued a purely digital approach would fail against low device quality, patchy connectivity and distrust of outsiders. The wedge was Olam itself — a commodity trader already working with millions of farmers.
Jiva grew quickly on paper: 50,000 Indonesian farmers added in 2023, three million on AgriCentral, advisory reach past 10 million farmers, and over 500,000 tonnes of harvest bought. Yet growth never made the venture self-sustaining, and in April 2025 Olam adopted an Updated Re-organisation Plan to de-lever its balance sheet, divest assets and become debt-free.
On 28 August 2025 Olam announced Jiva Ag's closure, affecting 606 employees (531 in Indonesia). The H1 2025 results already included a S$13.2M impairment of intangible assets tied primarily to Jiva, and Olam said it expected up to US$9M in one-off closure costs. The group retained Jiva's intellectual property and moved to redeploy or severance the workforce.
这件事要成立,得有什么
- The business model required continuing parent investment to run its physical agent network, so it was structurally dependent on Olam's willingness to fund it
- When Olam shifted from nurturing ventures to de-leveraging and divesting, Jiva's 'profit-for-purpose' framing could not offset a P&L that never closed
- Reach metrics (10M+ farmers advised) were impact, not revenue — they did not change the cash position the parent had to cover
- Starting inside Olam's supply chain gave Jiva distribution but tied its fate to a single corporate backer's strategy
- A 2023 external capital raise facilitated by Delphos did not reduce the need for ongoing group funding
可借鉴之处
Profit-for-purpose is still a P&L: when the parent's balance sheet turns, reach and impact are not return. A venture inside a big company's supply chain lives and dies with the parent's strategy.
后续进展
As of 28 August 2025, Olam Group had announced the closure and was supporting the 606 affected employees through redeployment within the group or severance aligned with local regulations, plus outplacement. Jiva's intellectual property remained with Olam or a subsidiary, and the group continued executing its Updated 2025 Re-organisation Plan to de-lever and divest its remaining businesses.
