Keynotopia sells downloadable Apple Keynote and PowerPoint UI stencils for prototyping iPad, iPhone and Android apps, so designers and developers can build interactive mockups without writing code.

47.50 total startup cost: $5 hosting, a $7.50 domain and a $35 WordPress theme; payments ran through an e-Junkie shopping cart.

起因

In June 2010 Amir Khella published a blog post about prototyping iPad applications with Apple Keynote and shared his Keynote templates for free. The post was picked up by respected bloggers and spread through the design and iPhone communities, drawing more than 10,000 visits and 500 template downloads in under three weeks. Khella, who had never sold a product before, wondered whether readers were downloading because the idea was useful or just cool — and whether they would pay for it.

经过

Instead of running a survey, he spent three hours building a WordPress site with an e-Junkie shopping cart and a few screenshots, and launched it at 1:38 am; the first PayPal notification arrived within ten minutes. In the first 60 days Keynotopia recorded 1,491 downloads, 19,235 unique visitors, 769 linkbacks and only 2 returns. He tested 29 variations of the landing page, cut bounce rate from 59% to 12%, and reached Google's first results page for searches like 'iPad prototyping' in less than two weeks. A free wireframing set released through Smashing Magazine later fed buyers back to the paid bundle, and a personal text-only newsletter turned subscribers into a feedback loop.

结果

As of the September 2010 write-up, Keynotopia was two months old, profitable, and had passed 1,500 customers. Khella called it an experiment that shifted him from selling his time to selling value — 'getting paid over and over for a value that I used my time to create.'
