Lovable's vibe-coding bet: from Antler-backed start to $13.3B valuation, $500M ARR

Lovable's vibe-coding bet: anyone can build software with prompts — from viral open-source start to $13.3B and $500M ARR in two years.

Lovable

它在赌什么That text prompts could replace coding for the 99% who don't write software — and that a Stockholm team could win the category.在扩

做的是什么生意

An AI 'vibe coding' platform where users describe an app or website in plain text and get working software — no coding required.

启动资金$15M pre-Series A led by Creandum (Feb 2025); Antler among the earliest backers.

起因

Anton Osika, former CTO of YC-backed Depict.ai, built the open-source GPT Engineer in a weekend in 2023 and watched it go viral. He founded Lovable with Fabian Hedin in Stockholm in 2023 — Antler backed the pair early — and the app-building product launched publicly in late 2024.

经过

By Feb 2025 Lovable had 500,000 users, $17M ARR and a $15M pre-Series A led by Creandum. In July 2025 it raised a $200M Series A led by Accel at a $1.8B valuation — Sweden's largest-ever Series A — and crossed $100M ARR eight months after launch with just 45 employees. In Dec 2025 it raised $330M at $6.6B (CapitalG and Menlo led; NVentures, Salesforce, Khosla and EQT Growth followed), passing $200M ARR with 25M projects built, 200M monthly visits, and customers like Klarna, Uber and Zendesk. Osika publicly resisted pressure to move to Silicon Valley.

结果

Still live and scaling: in Aug 2026 Lovable raised $400M at a $13.3B valuation led by Menlo Ventures and the EU's Scaleup Fund, and hit $500M ARR in June 2026.

背景

Lovable's bet was simple and contrarian: the next wave of software would be built by people who can't code, using plain-language prompts to an AI. Anton Osika — who had been CTO of YC-backed Depict.ai — built the open-source GPT Engineer in a weekend in 2023, saw it go viral among developers, and founded Lovable with Fabian Hedin in Stockholm. Antler backed the company early, and the product launched publicly in late 2024.

Growth was unusually steep. By Feb 2025 Lovable had 500,000 users and $17M ARR, enough for a $15M pre-Series A led by Creandum. In July it raised a $200M Series A led by Accel at a $1.8B valuation — Sweden's largest-ever Series A — and crossed $100M ARR eight months after launch with only 45 full-time employees. By Dec 2025 a $330M Series B at $6.6B (CapitalG and Menlo Ventures leading, with NVentures, Salesforce, Khosla and EQT Growth) pushed ARR past $200M, with 25M projects built, 200M monthly visits and enterprise customers including Klarna, Uber and Zendesk.

The company deliberately stayed in Europe. Osika said he resisted investor pressure to move to Silicon Valley, arguing Stockholm's talent and urgency were enough to build a global AI company — a visible test of whether Europe could mint a category-defining AI startup. A Nov 2025 VAT compliance flap briefly threatened the story before the company said it would fix it.

The bet kept paying: in June 2026 Lovable passed $500M ARR, and in Aug 2026 it raised $400M at a $13.3B valuation, led by Menlo Ventures and the EU's Scaleup Fund — the fund's first AI 'application layer' bet. Lovable remains private, targets 65% margins, and is spending on enterprise governance, integrations and infrastructure.

这件事要成立,得有什么

  • Osika's open-source GPT Engineer gave Lovable a viral wedge: developers shared the 'type a prompt, get an app' demo before any product existed.
  • Pricing was a weapon: Lovable priced below rival developer tools and moved users to cheaper tiers even when it cost ARR, betting self-serve scale beats short-term revenue.
  • Staying in Stockholm became differentiation: Osika publicly resisted relocation, and Europe's capital (later the EU Scaleup Fund) followed with late-stage money.
  • By riding foundation models instead of building one, Lovable avoided model capex and kept switching power — using Claude, GPT-5 and others as they improved.
  • Enterprise land-and-expand: a business tier with SSO, governance and data opt-outs turned prototyping users like Klarna and Zendesk into paying customers.

可借鉴之处

Demand for AI app-building is consumer-scale, not developer-only: viral word-of-mouth, self-serve pricing and staying in Europe became moats while model providers stayed focused elsewhere.

后续进展

As of 12 Aug 2026, Lovable is private and scaling: $500M ARR as of June 2026, a $400M Series C at $13.3B led by Menlo Ventures and the EU's Scaleup Fund (EQT-managed), with Balderton newly on the cap table and previous backers including CapitalG, Salesforce Ventures, NVentures, DST Global, Khosla and Creandum. It reports 25M+ projects built, 200M+ monthly visits and customers such as Klarna, Uber and Zendesk; it targets 65% margins by H2 2026 and is investing in enterprise governance, third-party integrations and infrastructure. No IPO has been announced.
