Founded in 2015 by Cambridge academics Adam Guthrie and Dr Graham Sills and seed-funded by Autonomy founder Mike Lynch, Luminance started from the observation that contracts run on dense, precedent-heavy documents that generic software could not reliably read.

By February 2025 the bet had scale: over $115M raised in the previous 12 months and $165M in total after a $75M Series C led by Point72 Private Investments on 2025-02-18, with Forestay, RPS Ventures, Schroders Capital and existing backers March Capital and National Grid Partners joining. Its legal transformer was trained on 150M+ verified legal documents, many not publicly available; clients grew fivefold in two years to 700+ across 70+ countries, headcount rose 80% to about 250 in 2024, and it opened offices in San Francisco, Dallas and Toronto.

As of the 2025-02-18 announcement Luminance remains independent and scaling: 700+ clients, a North American presence tripled in size, and a recently launched agent product, Lumi Go, for AI-to-AI contract negotiation; no exit or shutdown has been announced.
