In May 2023 Arthur Mensch (DeepMind), Guillaume Lample and Timothée Lacroix (Meta, where Lample led the LLaMA team) founded Mistral in Paris. ASML, Nvidia, Bpifrance, DST Global, Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, Index Ventures and Lightspeed sat on the cap table, and the founders retained control. The company was expanding into AI infrastructure with Nvidia and remained Europe's highest-valued AI startup.
