Northvolt's battery bet ends in bankruptcy with $8B debt; Lyten buys the remains

Europe's would-be battery champion raised $10B+, hit ramp troubles, and filed bankruptcy with $8B debt in March 2025; Lyten bought the assets.

Northvolt

它在赌什么That Europe could build a homegrown EV battery champion by scaling gigafactories fast enough to match Asian incumbents.已经没了

做的是什么生意

A Swedish maker of lithium-ion EV battery cells, founded to give European carmakers a local alternative to Asian suppliers, with gigafactories in Sweden and Germany.

启动资金Over $10B in equity, debt and public financing since 2016 (Reuters); Sifted puts total raised at €15B.

起因

Founded in 2016, per Reuters, to build Europe's own EV battery champion, Northvolt won Volkswagen as its largest owner (21%) and signed a $2B cell supply contract with BMW in 2020, then started building a gigafactory in Skellefteå, northern Sweden.

经过

Northvolt raised more than $10B and broke ground on plants in Sweden, Germany and Poland, but the Skellefteå factory repeatedly failed to ramp to target output. A $5B green loan agreed in early 2024 was later cancelled, BMW cancelled its $2B order in June 2024, and in November 2024 Northvolt filed for US Chapter 11 protection. CEO Peter Carlsson stepped down, saying the company needed up to $1.2B to continue.

结果

On 12 March 2025 Northvolt filed for bankruptcy in Sweden with more than $8B of debt across nine entities — among the largest insolvencies in Swedish corporate history. A court-appointed trustee sold its main assets to US lithium-sulfur battery maker Lyten, which completed the purchase in February 2026 and took over the employees.

背景

Northvolt was founded in 2016, per Reuters, to build Europe's own electric-vehicle battery champion. It raised more than $10B in equity, debt and public financing, counted Volkswagen (21%) and Goldman Sachs (19%) as its biggest owners, and in 2020 signed a $2B cell supply contract with BMW. The bet was that a homegrown, vertically integrated gigafactory could cut European carmakers' dependence on Asian suppliers such as CATL and BYD.

The money and orders were never the problem; output was. The flagship Skellefteå plant repeatedly failed to reach target production, a $5B green loan agreed in early 2024 was cancelled as troubles mounted, and BMW cancelled its $2B order in June 2024. In November 2024 Northvolt filed for US Chapter 11 protection, CEO Peter Carlsson stepped down saying the company needed up to $1.2B to continue, and on 12 March 2025 Northvolt filed for bankruptcy in Sweden.

At the end of January 2025 its debt stood at more than $8B across the nine entities in the Chapter 11 process, with over 5,000 employees affected. The bankruptcy trustee sold the main assets — the Skellefteå gigafactory, a German site and remaining IP — to US lithium-sulfur battery maker Lyten, which completed the purchase in February 2026, took over the employees and plans to restart the business. Most owners, including Volkswagen and Goldman Sachs, had already written their stakes down to zero.

The collapse was one of the biggest in Swedish corporate history and a strategic blow to Europe's battery ambitions: the continent's best-funded attempt to rival Asian cell makers ended with a foreign buyer owning the factory, while the underlying lesson — that construction milestones are not manufacturing milestones — became the case's main transferable insight.

这件事要成立,得有什么

  • Northvolt raised more than $10B and was Europe's best-funded bet against CATL and BYD, so its collapse tested the continent's whole battery strategy, not just one company.
  • The failure was operational, not financial: multi-billion-dollar orders existed, but Skellefteå never ramped to target output, and BMW's cancelled $2B order exposed the gap.
  • The outcome shows how capital-intensive bets end: creditors including Volkswagen and Goldman Sachs wrote their stakes to zero, while a lithium-sulfur startup bought the factories out of bankruptcy.
  • Sweden's deputy prime minister publicly framed the Lyten sale as 'a win for Europe's energy independence', showing how much political weight had rested on a single private company.

可借鉴之处

Orders, capital and political tailwind cannot substitute for manufacturing execution: the gap between announced capacity and proven output is where capital-intensive bets actually die.

后续进展

As of September 2026 the original Northvolt entities are in bankruptcy administration. Trustee Ackordscentralen confirmed in February 2026 that Lyten completed its purchase of the main assets — the Skellefteå gigafactory, a German site and remaining IP — took over the employees and plans to restart the business around lithium-sulfur technology. Volkswagen and Goldman Sachs had already written their stakes to zero, per Reuters; the estate is being wound down with creditors recovering only part of what they are owed.
