Omarchy is a curated Linux desktop: one command turns a fresh Arch install into a configured Hyprland (Wayland) environment with themes, developer tools, curated apps and mandatory LUKS encryption. Version 4.0 rewrote the desktop as a single Quickshell process configured in Lua, made plugins plain git repositories, and let users pick any of nine coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini, Grok, Copilot and others) as the system agent — so the whole OS becomes text an AI can read and operate. The MIT-licensed repository moved from the Basecamp GitHub org to the Omacom Foundation org.

Omarchy began around 2025 as DHH's hobby project, a sibling of his Ubuntu installer Omakub, transplanting 'convention over configuration' to the desktop. dev.to notes it was public for more than a year before its August 2026 trending moment, and GeekPark writes that until version 3 it spread by word of mouth on DHH's own taste rather than through any product push.

On 2026-08-14, Omarchy 4.0 shipped: the desktop was rewritten as a single Quickshell process (status bar, launcher, menus, lock screen), configuration moved to Lua, plugins became git repositories, and setup let users choose a default coding agent among nine providers. GeekPark reports the plugin market passed 500 within a week and 1,074 within ten days, with a first plugin contest on August 19; Framework lists Omarchy among officially supported systems, and 4.0 was tuned for the 2026 Dell XPS. On 2026-08-19 a core team replaced one-person governance, and on 2026-08-21 DHH announced the Omacom Foundation with $8M from eight founders — Michael Dell, Jack Dorsey, Tobi Lütke, Patrick Collison, Matthew Prince, Brendan Iribe, Jason Fried and DHH — to hold the trademark, fund infrastructure and promotion, and support upstream open-source projects, with the first grant going to Hyprland's author Vaxry.
