In late 2021, Comcast corporate developers Zhen Lu and Pardeep Singh had spent about $50,000 on Ethereum mining rigs in their New Jersey basements. Mining was boring, barely profitable, and about to end with The Merge, so they repurposed the GPUs for machine learning. Both had done ML work at Comcast, and the experience of developing on GPUs struck them as 'hot garbage' - that frustration became RunPod, a platform for hosting AI apps that emphasized speed, easy hardware configuration, and developer tools.

With no marketing experience, in early 2022 they posted in AI-oriented subreddits offering free access to their servers in exchange for feedback. That landed beta testers, then paying customers, and within nine months they quit their jobs at $1M in revenue. They bootstrapped for almost two years - no free tier, no VC, no debt - expanding capacity through revenue-share deals with data centers. By May 2024 the platform had 100,000+ developers and a $20M seed round co-led by Dell Technologies Capital and Intel Capital, after Dell partner Radhika Malik found RunPod on Reddit; Hugging Face co-founder Julien Chaumond invested after using the product and reaching out through support chat.
