SmartSolar bets Vietnam's SMEs want rooftop solar if someone else fronts the cash
SmartSolar installs rooftop solar on Vietnamese SME roofs at zero upfront cost and splits the savings; $3.15M raised, ~4MWp deployed.
SmartSolar
做的是什么生意
A solar-as-a-service provider that finances, installs and maintains rooftop solar for Vietnam's small and mid-sized businesses at zero upfront cost, splitting the energy savings.
启动资金:$1.85M seed (Mar 2025, Picus Capital and 2degrees led, Iterative joined); $1.3M debt (Mar 2026, SECO Startup Fund and SKR Reisen); $3.15M total.
起因
Founded in 2024 by Kevin Junker, SmartSolar sells a solar-as-a-service model: it finances, installs and maintains rooftop systems for SMEs, charging nothing upfront and splitting the savings with customers. Within less than six months of launch it was live with almost 1MWp of installed capacity across dozens of small and mid-sized business customers.
经过
In March 2025 SmartSolar raised a $1.85M seed led by Picus Capital and 2degrees — backers of German solar unicorn Enpal — with Iterative participating. The pitch leaned on a market gap: only about 5% of Southeast Asian rooftops have solar (~30GW across the region), while Germany, with far less sun and an eighth of the population, has four times the rooftop-solar penetration; banks rarely lend for such small installations, so SmartSolar paired fast approval with its own financing.
结果
Still live and scaling: in March 2026 SmartSolar closed $1.3M in debt — a $300,000 senior loan from Switzerland's SECO Startup Fund (its first global investment under new management by iGravity and Seedstars) plus a $1M facility from travel company SKR Reisen — bringing total funding to $3.15M. It had deployed nearly 4MWp across more than 75 systems for customers ranging from factories and automotive workshops to fitness centers, claiming 15–25% energy-cost reductions.
背景
SmartSolar's bet is that Vietnamese SMEs don't lack sunshine or desire — they lack upfront capital. The company finances, installs and maintains rooftop solar systems itself, charging businesses nothing to start and splitting the energy savings, so the switch to green power costs no money down.
Founder Kevin Junker, a former McKinsey consultant in Vietnam and Switzerland, said business owners were 'openly frustrated about their seemingly ever-rising electricity bills, but did not know how to tackle it.' He saw access to capital as the largest barrier: few Southeast Asian banks lend for small-scale installations, and when they do, approval is slow and interest rates are high.
The market gap is stark: only about 5% of Southeast Asian rooftops have solar — roughly 30GW across the region — while Germany, with an eighth of the population, has about four times the rooftop-solar penetration. In March 2025 SmartSolar raised a $1.85M seed led by Picus Capital and 2degrees (Enpal backers) with Iterative, and was already live with almost 1MWp across dozens of SME customers within six months.
By March 2026 the model had proven itself commercially: a $1.3M debt round — a $300,000 senior loan from Switzerland's SECO Startup Fund plus $1M from SKR Reisen — brought total funding to $3.15M, with nearly 4MWp deployed across more than 75 systems and claimed energy-cost cuts of 15–25%. 'Equity helped us build the platform. Debt is what allows us to scale,' said Junker.
这件事要成立,得有什么
- Junker read the market gap correctly: only ~5% of Southeast Asian rooftops have solar, and banks rarely lend for small installations.
- By financing installations itself and splitting savings, SmartSolar made switching to solar cost nothing upfront for SMEs.
- It paired fast approval processes and customer-friendly terms with a concrete claim: 15–25% energy-cost reductions.
- Sequencing was deliberate: equity built the platform, then debt financed scale — a $1.3M round followed the seed.
可借鉴之处
When banks won't lend small, the financing is the product: absorb the upfront-capital barrier and split the savings — then scale on debt, not just equity.
后续进展
As of 17 March 2026, SmartSolar is live and scaling in Vietnam: total funding stands at $3.15M (a $1.85M seed led by Picus Capital and 2degrees with Iterative, plus $1.3M in debt from the SECO Startup Fund and SKR Reisen), with nearly 4MWp of installed capacity across more than 75 SME systems — factories, automotive workshops and fitness centers — and claimed energy-cost savings of 15–25%. The company says it is building a solar financing platform to serve small and mid-sized businesses across Southeast Asia, starting with rooftop installations and expanding across the EnergyTech stack.
