Started in 2017 when Adam Wathan and Steve Schoger open-sourced Tailwind CSS, a utility-first framework that grew out of Wathan's abandoned side projects and caught on with developers; in December 2018 they released the Refactoring UI book, and its sales gave Wathan the financial cushion to leave contract work and go full-time.

After a year of v1.0 work, Tailwind UI launched in February 2020 to pent-up demand: over $500K in the first three days, about $2M in revenue within five months, and over $4M total for the business in under two years. The company peaked around $3–4M ARR with no venture capital and grew a small team.
