起因

Matt Holt — the Go developer behind the Caddy web server — wrote the Show HN post after about 10 years of nights-and-weekends work: he does not like his data living primarily on someone else's computer, wanted a local copy that would not 'gather dust and rot,' and built Timelinize to keep exported data alive and relevant. The project went open source in 2024 (GitHub repo created 2024-08-11 under AGPL-3.0).

The 2025-10-07 Show HN drew 630 points with about 163 comments, and GIGAZINE's review the next day walked through the timeline view, entity-aware world map, heatmaps, unified conversations and gallery — noting the AGPL v3.0 license, its then-current version 0.0.24, and the developers' own caveat that Timelinize is 'still in development and not yet complete.' The data-source list keeps growing: Facebook, Instagram, X, Google Photos, Apple Photos/iCloud, iMessage, SMS/MMS, Strava, GitHub, GPX and Telegram supported, with Chrome and Health on the planned list.

In active development as of 2026-09-02: repo updated 2026-09-01, 3,646 stars, 123 forks, Go + AGPL-3.0 at 0.0.x versions; the site and Discord community are running, and the author says he aims to get it stable for his own family's use.
