What the business is
An automated, AI-native wet lab in Lausanne that takes protein designs through in-house DNA synthesis, cell-free expression and SPR binding measurement, ordered via a web platform or an API.
The bet
As AI agents design thousands of proteins an afternoon, the bottleneck moves to physical testing — whoever automates the wet lab becomes where frontier AI goes for proof.
Starting capital
€34.35M ($40M) Series A led by Highland Europe (August 2026), with ACE Ventures, byFounders and Y Combinator re-investing; €6.8M seed led by ACE Ventures in late 2024.
How it started
Julian Englert and Daniel Nakhaee-Zadeh Gutierrez founded Adaptyv Bio in Lausanne in 2022 and launched it publicly in April 2023 with a pitch of 'changing protein engineering': combine generative AI, open-source software and a synthetic biology lab so anyone can test a designed protein without building a lab. The company went through Y Combinator and by late 2024 had nine people and a lab beginning to see commercial demand.
What happened
The company ran public protein-design competitions to prove its pipeline, then attracted frontier AI labs. In 2026 it shipped a public API integrated with Boltz, Chai, Cradle, Tamarind, Latent Labs and Benchling, letting AI agents order their own experiments. Anthropic's Claude designed proteins and sent them to the lab: 354 of 1,320 designs bound their target, a 26.8% hit rate that would have won five of six earlier competitions. Chai Discovery used Adaptyv to validate its Chai-2 zero-shot antibody results, and EU-Startups reports Roche and Novo Nordisk run design cycles roughly 4x faster than their internal pipelines. In August 2026 Adaptyv raised its $40M Series A.
What has to be true
Generative models collapsed the cost of designing candidate proteins, which mechanically shifted the scarce resource to experimental validation.
Owning the measurement step gives Adaptyv pricing power and a data moat: every run generates paired design-outcome data that improves the models customers use.
API-first design lets AI agents be the customer, riding the same agentic-autonomy wave instead of selling only to human scientists.
Frontier-lab validation (Anthropic publishing hit rates against its own model) functions as marketing no biotech vendor can buy.
What can be applied
When AI removes one bottleneck, capital moves to whatever becomes the next one: protein design got cheap, so the service selling physical proof became the choke point frontier labs queue behind.
Aftermath
As of September 2026 Adaptyv is expanding its Lausanne lab, opening a London lab and office in Q4 2026, and growing the team from about 25 to roughly 60, focused on production, automation and software. The stated long-term goal is a 'biological gigafactory' whose automated experimental throughput keeps pace with autonomous AI research systems.
