What the business is
Freemium dating app for iOS and Android with an anti-ghosting match flow and in-app petals currency
The bet
Forcing closure on unanswered matches, in a single city first, can beat ghosting and win users who tire of mainstream dating apps
How it started
Katie Dissanayake founded After in October 2023 after a decade in the dating app industry, including a job at Hud. She wanted to address dating app fatigue and ghosting, offering what she called accountability and closure.
What happened
On 26 September 2024 After launched in Austin, Texas. If matched users start a conversation and one stops replying, they are nudged; if they still don't respond, the match expires and they must pick a reason, such as distance or vibes, before continuing. After sends the other person a kind message. Matches that never message are prompted, then ended.
What has to be true
Dating app fatigue and ghosting left users frustrated and without closure
Dissanayake had worked in the industry for a decade and knew trust and safety and product
Requiring a reason for expired matches turns silence into a message
A single-city launch avoids the empty feel of having one user per state
What can be applied
When a product's core feature adds friction, as After does with its required reasons, a single-city launch lets it build a dense local community before the rule can scare users off.
Aftermath
As of 2024-09-26, After was available on iOS and Android, launching in Austin, with plans to expand across Texas before other states; no download or user figures were reported.
